There's a person in my PE walking class and I want to get to know that person better. We do stretches first then walk the whole class away. There's a time where we wait until the teacher gets to a point in class though. How do I start talking to that person? Can I ask "What's your name?" and continue from there like "How many semesters you have been in here?" or something?

I would start off that way. Then I would bring up a topic that has happened in the news lately. Then ask about there favorite things. Ya might have things in common. Good LUCK I hope it works out for you.

you gave nice example how to begin the talk.. you can also tell him/her smth like "oh i've seen you several times here already and we always do strech together, but i still dont know ur name"
stay natural and dont blush or so too much.
make it feel like a normal small talk. however you should analyze his/her answers for yourself and see how interested he/she is.

Sounds like you know what to do, now just find the courage to do it. The best way to get to know someone is to ask questions. Find out about them by talking to them. You've got the perfect opportunity, now go take it. Don't be afraid, talking is harmless.
