I am 24 years old and have never tried drugs. I never plan to either. The problem is that the people I meet every day seem to think it is really good that they can smoke pot or whatever drug choice they choose. Personally I believe that drugs inhibit your ability to think straight and operate a motor vehicle. Same as a person who drinks. Of course drinking is legal if you are over 21. But its legal. I just dont understand the thought process for someone who does drugs. What is the point? Does it make you better at stuff, or does it take you away from your normal life? Dont you still have the same problems when you come back? Please help me understand.

Dont leave a message unless you are totally serious. Thanks!

I am not asking weather it should be legal or not or if alcohol should be outlawed. I am talking about the legality of it. Why do illegal things???? I try everything by the book and it seems to work just fine. Why do we have laws if people continue to break them?

I don't use drugs but someone very close to me does. I used to be very angry about it and still do get angry. I just thought he was using for the hell of it, but really he had made a poor choice by trying shortly after the murder of his best friend. Just that one time got him hooked, and I'm not talking about weed. I know for an absolute fact he does not want to be on drugs he hates it, but it is hard to break an addiction. So I totally understand where you are coming from, but please take into consideration that we all make bad choices. And some times that one bad choice turns into addiction. It does not make them a bad person. No his problem has not gone away, he is remined of it everyday, I belive it just makes him numb.

You're being very close-minded about this. There's a lot of things you're assuming, and a lot of things that you're completely unaware of.

If you believe that drugs inhibit your ability to think straight and operate a motor vehicle, you're wrong. My dad's been a pot smoker for about 25 years, and hardly has any blemishes on his driving record. And when I take Adderall, or someone does a couple lines of (good quality) cocaine, or even if someone drinks a red bull or two, it's scientifically proven that cognitive functions are improved. And there's plenty of other drugs that will do that. So not all psychoactives are dissociative.

There's a colorful array of reasons that a person will use, that include, but are not limited to:

Self-medication - Both physiological and psychological. Someone who suffers from chronic pain might smoke herb to easier be able to ignore it, or someone who is bipolar might smoke to relieve the hyperactive, racing feelings of mania, or the same substance yet again could be used as a sleep aid in both scenarios.

Social/Recreational - A myriad of drugs can be used help people let go of social anxieties/reservations so they can better communicate with others or even give them a common ground to connect in the first place. Or the drugs can help them just have a good time, and enjoy music more, laugh more, dance more, or anything like that.

Mind-Expansion - This narrows down the list pretty significantly. Some people just want to hear things differently, see things differently, just generally percieve things differently, and gain a new and different perspective of themselves and the world around them. In the mid-fifties before ridiculous and uneducated drug laws were made, there was plenty of scientific research done that found LSD to be of great psychotherapeutic value.

Increased Functionality - Described above. I can get more done in one day on Adderall than I can get done in almost a whole week, and plenty of college students use it as a study aid.

Boredom - Some people just can't find anything to do, and turn to drugs. This is why meth is so prevalent in the midwest.

Escapism/Coping/Dissociation - These are the people who are also in a sense self-medicating, but they're not really treating a condition. These are the folks that want to get away from it all, or just be numb so they don't feel the way they do. These are people that have issues with depression and self-acceptance. Alcohol is a big one here obviously; people get down and they drink, or as a song states "Alcohol, alternative to feeling like yourself". People do the drugs to ignore, or forget, or stuff their feelings down. This is what's really unhealthy above all else, and I despise it. This is also one of the most primary causes of addiction.

But in the end, a person can do whatever drugs they want. If they're not harming anybody else, and they function just fine, who are we to judge?

And to answer your addition... Are you kidding?? If it weren't for people breaking "laws", the US would still be under English control, slavery would still exist, the civil rights movement would never had happened, so on and so forth. If you don't have people breaking laws, you won't have change, reform, or revolution. And I don't know any half-intelligent person that doesn't want those things.

I smoke marijuana. With that being said, alcohol isn't necessarily any better just because it's legal. More deaths have been attributed to alcohol than just about anything. So, what about that?

Now, marijuana, in my opinion, should not be illegal. But that's another debate. It's not a gateway drug either. Marijuana, for me, unleashes my creativity. I can think more critically, raise more interesting questions and write better. I'm a writer so marijuana helps me come up with situations for conflict and plot that I would have never entertained otherwise. Personally, I think marijuana is harmless. There have not been any studies that prove it does any permanent, serious harm whatsoever. The short-term memory loss usually is over after the buzz and, aside from occasional paranoia from inexperienced users or users with preexisting mental issues, and the weight gained by the munchies, pot is harmless. It's even used to treat eye disorders and used for cancer patients to curb nausea and appetite problems. No cancers have been linked to marijuana and marijuana pales in comparison to other drugs such as cocaine, heroin, meth, lsd and the others.

That's just my opinion. Oh and some background: I'm almost finished with my Bachelors in English/Philosophy and i'm currently enrolled in another college, obtaining a Paralegal degree. I have a 3.5 average and I currently work in the top lawfirm in Michigan. I'm married and I have a beautiful 7month old daughter who is happy and advanced. I'm currently working on one of several novels, and plan to retire off of them when they eventually get published. Right now, I'm at 45,000 words. Just another 40,000 to go. Life is good.

Overall, crack is whack but pot is not. :^)

BTW- Sometimes the law isn't always the people's voice.

In the old tale of A Clockwork Orange, Alex fills his life with marauding/predatory behaviour. At last he is brought to justice and rehabilitated. No longer able to live the old way he had been living, he is now a victim to all those he hurt and it sends him right to hospital. There he inspires sympathy in all that he meets and becomes a national hero -- he casts off his rehabilitation and proudly announces to the world, "I was cured all right."

Would he be better off staying a victim ... ? He is primed for a rocking good time. I think it is commendable you have never tried drugs. Drug abuse solves no problems . . . but does war? does violence? does riches? People who do illegal drugs are getting away with something. What will you get away with?

Whether it is legal or illegal, people think drink and smoke, drug are cool.. why? it is because not every one is doing it, that makes them different . The society has a norm, if everyone is not working or studying.. it will be cool if you do... People tend to look at a special and different way.

serious answer - it's hard to get high on the legal ones. Except alcohol, and I'd rather deal with a stoner than a drunk, ANYDAY
