If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.
How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain - We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage. Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.
So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void.

I feel I have personal knowledge of the afterlife, being one who has experienced out-of-body travel. Such phenomenon has been documented by every culture throughout recorded history and the experiences all relate very closely to one another. If it ever happens to you (and it will if you desire it) you will no longer question an "afterlife". You will then know.

When you die you will experience exactly what you expect. If you believe you will be met by your expired loved ones you will, if you expect to stand at the pearly gates you will, if you expect to meet Jesus or Buddah or Muhammed you will, if you expect to roast in the fires of hell you will, if you expect to experience nothingness you will.
All of these experiences will be created by your own beliefs and will last only as long as you allow them to. When you realize you are creating your experience and decide you've had enough you will move on to the truth.
This law applies to everyone regardless of your religious affilitiation or personal belief system.

Nothing happens because there isn't anyone for anything to happen to. You is just a mental construct that arises from neurological processes in the brain and hence the concept of 'you' exists only in the mind. After death, no more brain processes, no more mind, no more you. The End.

We are immortal in a way that might be silly to describe.
The "specialness" of you cannot die and will be reborn many times and in many people.
Heaven and Hell are right here on Earth.

I think that my human body will come back to Earth's ground, ever part of the cycle of life on our planet.
I don't believe in "heaven", "hell", "realm", and so on. I believe they don't exist.
My human body won't survive, but maybe some parts of what I shared with others will.
Or maybe not.
Whether I am alive or dead, I am part of the cycle of life on Earth-planet. That's my "faith" :-), and I feel happy with this.
I stay on Earth whatever happens! lol
No "rapture" nor "abduction" for me, please. Fanx.

When I die, my wife can do whatever she wants with my remains that'll make her feel better. Mostly likely that'll be cremation. As for my "soul", I don't believe in a soul. I believe when you die, you just die.
