my senior class is going to rome for our senior trip. we'll have a few hours when we can wander on our own, and I'd like some advice on where to go. we'll be seeing the major tourist sites as a group, but after that... any suggestions?

if you make it to the piazza Navona (spx) try the roasted chestnuts too! do you have a schedule of where you'll be when you have the free time? if it's by St Peter's Square - right along the Borgo pio (if you're standing on the main strip with your back to the basicilla it's the street over to your left) there is a great lttle spot that's actually open in mid-day (many are closed not to reopen until 7pm) called Castell Romani - it's small and family run and GREAT food. along the Borgo Pio it's up toward the Vatican. ooh, there are also some wonderful bakeries!!
feel free to email me a schedule if you have one -- i'm weird and take notes of my travels -- when yo get old you have a tendency to forget LOL

You might want to relax at the "Tre Scalini" cafè at Piazza Navona and just watch the world go by. Or there's a cute little cafè in the Pantheon square.

No! there are just expensive cafés near tourist spots. Just walk two streets further and watch where the italians go inside!

Piazza Novana! the best place in town, plus you can find the best gelato there and just sit and talk and people watch with your friends
