I don't think there is one. There was a lot of "hand washing" by both sides. The Soviets didn't want to admit to losing and why they lost and the U.S. doesn't want to be linked to have created and backed Al Quida, which originally was fighting the Soviets. Most if not all those terroist training grounds were created by the CIA. The CIA probably even created the impression that suicide by bomb was OK in the Muslim religion.

On the other side, the Soviets make toys with bombs in them so the little kids could blow their arms off when they found the toys, bombed civilian villages and if you didn't know most of the Soviet Union was against the communists which only 2% or so were card carrying (that's why the Soviet Union fell apart as quickly as it did). To keep all these people in line they had them go out and fight so that they would be killed off. Stalin killed as many Soviet people in various prison camps as the Nazis did by fighting. So with a can of beans a day as rations and a gun, these non Russians (the Russians were the heart, mind and soul of the Soviet Union) were sent to die or get injured in Afganistan. Between 1979 and 1988 15,000 Soviet soldiers died and an estimated 1 million Afghans died during the same period. I heard the Soviet lost an estimate one aircraft a day and hundreds of vehicals.

I would name two that come to mind. "The Bear Went Over the Mountain" and "The Otherside of the Mountain".

The first book looks at Soviet operation in Afghanistan whereas the second looks at Mujihaden operations. Both are very good books.
