Here are some contenders who came to mind:

David Tomlinson- an under-rated actor who most famously played the father in Mary Poppins and role in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. He had great mix of authority with an undercurrent of gentle vulnerability.

Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn shared smilar qualities- good looks, grace, style, gentle authority, humour (love of playing the clown) and generosity. In all honesty, though, I haven't watched more than extracts of their films.

Vivienne Leigh- purely for Gone with the wind.

Tim Curry- for The Rock Horror Picture Show , (later for Clue).

Jack Nicholson- for Batman and The Witches of Eastwick rather than his 1970s films.

John Travolta- hasn't stretched himself as much as some others but one of the most charismatic men to grace the screen.

Patrick Swayze - primarily for Dirty Dancing but also Ghost.

Kevin Costner- for a wide range of films including the Oscar winning Dances with wolves, the ambitious Waterworld and intimate studies of American life such as A perfect world, Bull Durham and Field of Dreams.

Steve Martin, John Candy, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams.

Harrison Ford- a throwback to the kind of film stars some thought used to exist but generally only really did in adventure comics. He has a self deprecating humour, charisma, ruggedness and sensitivity mixed with masculinity.

Michael J Fox- 80s/90s teen icon in several important movies- not just Back to the future. Then went on to Spin City.

Oliver Reed- larger than life, great wit, loved life to the full, intensely intelligent, sensitive and romantic. Superb turns in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Castaway.

Michael Douglas- has starred in some of the most entertaining blockbusters and consistently impressed with his humour, charm and gravitas that can turn in to menace eg. The War of the Roses.

Most of the actors in Dead Poets Society.

Johnny Depp.

Sam Neill for Jurassic Park.

That will do for now- sorry I didn't narrow down to 5.
