Why is mass transit not used by a lot more people? The city buses I take are virtually empty, for the most part. I see so many cars on the roads with only a driver and no passengers. What is wrong with this picture?

unfortunately not many cities have good mass transit systems, San Francisco has a great system, as well as New York, and London. The places where they really NEED one, like Los Angeles, it is poorly developed. They are JUST NOW trying to build a system around the city..usually works better building the system first...then the city around it. You still cannot really get from city to city although they have built some subway systems, they just don't connect up, it could literally take someone 4-5 hours to get to someplace they could drive to in 1 hour! People are just not going to give up their cars unless the mass transit is quick and reliable.

Back in the 70's, there was a shortage of gasoline (caused mostly by ham-handed attempts by the US government to regulate the market). A bus stopped a block from my house, and directly in front of my workplace; at the time, the fare was 50 cents. The riding time was 65 minutes each way. Of course, I had to coordinate my schedule with the bus -- it ran once an hour. If I drove my car, it cost about $1.25; I would be from doorstep to desk in 20 minutes. I was not about to sell my time for a dollar an hour; so I stopped riding the bus.

Yes people are concerned about the environment but they also care more about themselves. People can take the city bus and what not but who would if its more convienent and more practical to own a car and drive yourself to get there faster and not have to share your space with total strangers.

time is money. As long as mass transit can not get you where you need to be in the time you have available, you have to seek alternative methods.

Many people say they are concerned, but aren't concerned enough to inconvenience themselves.

You don't hear people saying "no, I don't care", so the amount of caring might seem more than it is.
