Sony used to be an innovator and make good quality products.
That was in the past.
Their quality has become shoddy. Cameras, camcorders, tvs, laptop batteries, all have had major product recalls in the last couple of years.
Sony does not even make their own LCDs. They are made in a joint venture with Samsung.
They increasingly depend on proprietary designs that force people into buying their widgets to upgrade (memory stick, PS2 flash memory, etc.).
They are cruising on their reputation which degrades over time.
Samsung will eventually put them out of their misery.

I even have heard of this for the television, yet no longer for the audio. right this is the concern: A television that makes use of a intense voltage bulb (DLP, Projector), choose dissimilar present day and voltage in the 1st few seconds to ignite. this means it needs a power surge. The surge protectors attempt to evade this. Sony and different businesses advise you no longer use a surge protector for the television. The 'clamping' of the AC power can harm a television. yet this shouldn't impact the sound. different concern: a working laptop or laptop united statesand a house theater united statesare 2 dissimilar issues. a working laptop or laptop being all digital does not care if a united statescreates observed-teeth waves. however the analog element of a house theater is comfortable to noise on the AC lines. A united statesfor a working laptop or laptop - makes dissimilar noise because it is unquestionably a motor vehicle-battery charger in-line collectively with your AC power. APC has some instruments particularly designed for homestead theater/audio purchasers. you somewhat dont choose to a popular united statesfor your audio device. So attempt no longer plugging the television into the UPS. If the concern keeps up - eliminate the united statesaltogether.

I agree with the third answer and it's really more than opinion
if you read the business journals. I'll give Sony their due on tvs -
in fact I have a Sony 42" hd Wega and it's great but I got it for
a really good price $800 off what it normally sold for - otherwise
for full price, I would have gotten another brand. But, when it
comes to their audio products, I think they are over priced and
just average. The fact is, when it comes to audio, their last
hooray was the Walkman

where plasma /lcd tv's are concerned both pioneer and panasonic are both better than sony and i would place my lg (a korean set) alongside any sony for comparison and i beleive it would give the sony a run for its money-whilst they do make good tv's they are nothing special by any stretch of the imagination. (the trinitron was innovative-but those days are long gone i'm afraid) in the audio department saying their last hurrah was the walkman was a bit harsh i thought (but funny though) as sony do make some very impressive surround sound amps/systems.

Sony does have the best LCD projection TV available today (SXRD). Their LCD flat panels are also very good, but not necessarily superior to others. They were never competitive in plasma, and I think they have stopped making them. I have always had good luck with Sony products, both TVs and video cameras.

Yeah, I agree sony is pretty good. They seem to have made a vast range of electronics from cameras to TVs to computers, and they have been pretty successful. I recently got a sony projector and it is just amazing... you can never go wrong with sony.

i would agree to some degree that sony still make some of the best video although companies like samsung and hitachi are very close behind and at better prices... but i would disagree about them being a leader in audio...they are far behind in that department ... they try and add convienient features but their audio equipment does not compare well at all to manufacturers like yamaha, pioneer, bose and harmon kardon

Samsung has some darn good LCD TVs. I plan on buying a Samsung 32 inch LCD in a few months.
I think in TVs, at least, you can find just as good for cheaper.
