I am having a problem with stray cats in my side yard. I have a tan bark pathway and they think it is a litter box.

I was thinking of pouring either vinegar or ammonia on the bark. Which one do you think cats hate the most?

I have already tried the sprays you find at the stores to keep them away but it isn't working that is why I thought I'd try doing this. What do you think?

Pouring ammonia will only encourage them, as urine breaks down into ammonia and they will feel the need to remark their spot. Vinegar will help break down the ammonia odor, but will not discourage them from using the area - it will simply keep it fresher.
If the commercial sprays have not worked for you, try sprinkling cayenne pepper around the area. It will have to be reapplied after any rain, as it will get washed away. The cat's will not want to sniff this, nor will they enjoy getting it on their paws (but don't worry, it won't harm them).

The front H on vinegar makes it an acid. The ending OH on ammonia make it a base.

definitely NOT ammonia....that is what their urine smells like. It will attract.

Vinegar MIGHT help neutralize the odor, but I doubt if that will deter them.

Nature's Miracle, however, breaks down the salt in the urine and gets rid of the smell. GETS RID of it! It works, and the company guarantees it, or your money back.

You can pick this product up at virtually any pet store.

Chlorine from chlorox. renew it twice daily.
ammonia will NOT work,
vinegar (= 4% acetic acid) is not a deterrent, it is also too weak..
Chilli powder will work but is expensive and does not stick easily to surfaces. chilli flakes are a little cheaper.
Chlorox is cheap spreads well, and will neutralize some of the urine smell. Apply it for a week.
Antifreeze, (= propylene glyco), attracts animals and they like it's smell and are enticed to consume it. It then poisons them. (i.e. kills them dead).
Good luck.

There are lots of things you can try: vinegar, lemon peel, orange peel, citronella or chili powder mixed with garlic powder. Cats hate all of those things. Ammonia is too harsh.

Vinegar for outside purpose, but have you thought about blocking the cats from coming in at all. Because what happens if they get mad at you for pouring stuff all over where they go to the bathroom? They might find a better place in your yard? That would suck. That is why you should put up a fence.

Vinagar because ammonia can be harmful to animals. Also cat pee has ammonia in it, so it could attract them!
Hope I helped! :)
