It seems before any surgery, the prep sheet tells you to remove nail polish.

Because general anaesthetic can effect circulation. Changes in the colour of nail beds is one of first signs that there is a change. They need to see what colour they are before you go under, and during. Spotting signs as early as possible can reduce problems associated with the side effects of general anaesthetic.
Despite the rise in plastic surgeries, general anaesthetic is still not without its risks.

The anethesist and the nurses use your finger and toes (nail beds) to see if the oxygen is getting through to where your body needs it. Sometimes an anesthetic can cause a patient to not get enough oxygen in, so since your extremities are easily accessible and visual, they use your hands. I have never heard of nail polish ever reacting with drugs or interfering with OR instruments, but I have heard also of the nail polish chipping and getting into the open wound. That in turn can cause an infection, which can be severe if the cause is not readily known. I have been in health care field for almost eight years now....so as a good rule of measure....NEVER wear your nail polish when you have any surgery done.

The first couple answers you received are correct. Nail polish needs to be removed so if there is a lack of oxygen,the doctors will notice it first in your external limbs farthest from your heart first...as in your fingernails.

The doctors and nurses pay attention to the color of your nail beds. If your nail beds are getting darker in color (purplish) then there could be a problem.

docs and nurses can see if your blood and oxygen levels are flowing correctly by looking at your finger nails, kind of a window to the inside.

I never knew you had to remove it. I have had 3 operatiosn and always had nail polish on.

The anesthesiologist needs to see your fingertips and make sure they're normal color. If they're pale or blue, then you're not receiving enough oxygen, and they need to correct that to prevent brain damage.

Because some of the polishes contain metal. Some of the instruments used in surgery are magnetic, and they want to be extra careful when doing it.

its coz when they du the surgery they use certain chemicals & those chemicals can react with the nail polish wich can be highly effective so thats why they u 2 remove it
