it depends, if you are on the road at 8am, not landing at 8am. you might be able to get there in under an hour.
if you are landing at 8am, forget it. rush hour into manhattan lasts clear past 10am.
the most reliably quick way to get from jfk to manhattan is the air train. it's $5, then take the Long Island Rail Road into Penn Station. That'll take 45 minutes door to door.
Penn Station is 10 blocks south of time square. you can walk it in 10 minutes or if you have a lot of luggage, can take a cab for about $5.

Forget that.... 8 AM is the height of the Rush Hour. 2 hours if you are lucky.
If you don't have a lot of luggage, or small kids, take the JFK AirTrain to Sutphon Blvd/ Archer Ave/ Jamaica.
Take the Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station (34th St and 7th Ave) in Manhattan - 35 min. $12 (7 LIRR fare and $5 AirTrain fee)

About 1 - 1 1/2 hours and will cost $45 plus tip into Manhattan, about $85.00 plus tip to get back. Take the subway $12.00 each way. Take Airtrain to E train or A train. See maps at WWW.MTA.ORG

The fastest way at that hour is the mono-rail to Jamacia, and then the LIRR or better the E trail to TImes Square., If you are set on a taxi, with traffic you willnever know.

yes, public transport is your best option at that time.
Cabs are a flat fee, if you take one, so its not like they are going to take the longest way to raise your fare. You can just trust the driver, hes done this hundreds of times.
It should take anywhere from 1-1.5 hrs...
