Real reason: So the spray from the running water of a flushing toilet does not go all over the bathroom, including your toothbrush, carrying really bad germs with it. Think about it, do you even want to go into a public restroom, with multiple open toilets, all spraying dirty water?
Other real reason: so a person can sit and talk and really annoy someone who is trying to get ready to go somewhere.
Yet another: So a prankster can have the best seat in town for the screaming and foul language that will come out of the occupied shower when the seated prankster flushes the toilet, on purpose,and uses up all the cold water.
More: How would shoes ever get tied if it weren't for the toilet seat to put a foot up on?
And: Great place to stack stuff when you are in the shower, deprives the prankster and the talker of a place to sit.

If you don't put the lid down when you flush germs have the ability to be spewed 15 feet. The lid might be to prevent everything in a 15 foot radius from getting contaminated.

by saying lid u mean the second border or the one that covers eveything? if u mean the second border its for women so that they can sit on it but if u mean the one that covers i think its to hold the realy bad smell when u poooop :D:D

To keep you from dropping that contact in there. To cover the smell after you get done dropping a stinkin load. To keep little kids from drowning. To keep little midgets from drowning.
