(This answer is the truth.)
It is not about being bored or necessarily, tired. It is about "transitioning" from one mode to another. That is why, when we wake up, we also yawn. It is a biological way to keep all the "villagers" in sync with one another, so they can work together on the same schedule. That is why yawns are "contagious."

You yawn when you are tired as your body is not taking in enough oxygen. If you witness someone yawn, your brain thinks there is an oxygen shortage and makes you yawn to get more into your system.

I have been told that yawning works at a subconcious level and is said to be response by the brain to a perceived shortage of oxygen shortage.

It's a 'herd mentality' thing. Someone starts it and it keeps going.
Sort of like sheep jumping for no reason, they don't know why they're jumping, but they all jump.
