Clarification: I am NOT going off my current meds; I have been medicated for years and just want to believe there is something out there that works better--as I can tell you first hand, my illness has been largely treatment-resistant. And while they're generally thought to be safe, I do have to have my liver checked with my current bipolar med.

No, but my mother does. The alternate methods don't work according to her. The "drugs" you will be taking are perfectly safe and will help your life immensly.
Otherwise, just try to suck it up and change on your own. The accupuncture , excetera is a waste of money.

From my little Clinical Psychology experience, I remember that it is common for people on psycho-pharmacology to feel like you do. The problem is that the drugs make you feel better and more lucid, and so you begin to question your need to keep taking the drugs. When they stop taking them, because they are falling back into depression, psychosis, etc, they cannot recognize it is their decision to stop taking the drugs is the cause the problem.

Don't stop taking the drugs. Talk to your psychiatrist. If you want to stop taking medications or try different treatments, do so only under direct care of a qualified (and certified) mental health professional. If your doctor will not work with you to try different, medically sound, treatments, seek out a different doctors.

But don't try an 'alternative' method in place of your medication. Alternative methods, at best, have only minor benefits, and at worst are total scams and will make you worse. All of the 'evidence' they tout is not scientifically tested and is usually not under any quality control or reliable certification.

No and I'll tell you why they don't work. If you are bipolar, you have a chemical imbalance in your brain. You need the medication prescribe to you to normalize those chemicals. The bad thing is that some of the drugs make you feel tired so people go off of them and that is really BAD. Also some of the drugs work so well that people don't think they need them anymore and they go off of them, too. If you have been prescribed medication, my suggestion would be to take it as directed. If you notice any unusual symptoms, contact your doctor. But do NOT stop taking the medication.

I know two people who have ocd/bipolar (they are brother and sister) and I can tell you with certainty that the medications given for these problems are safe. ocd and bipolar are just chemicaal imbalances, like diabetes and thyroid disorders. You're just putting in what's missing when you take these drugs. Some antidepressants, or seratonin reuptake inhibitors, are even prescribed to pregnant women who need them. There has been NO evidence of any adverse issues for the children born to mothers on these meds, so you can imagine their safety. I think it would be a shame to deprive yourself of your true identity and allow this fog to surround you when you can just lift it with the proper meds and live a less stressed life. I know one of the sypmtoms of osd is to worry about chemical exposure, but I promise you the benefits you'll get from the right meds will totally fade any fears you may have. Claim your life again; it's too short not to.

I agree that drugs are not good for you. I haven't actually been diagnosed with bipolar (because I don't like seeing a psychiatrist), but I do have the symptoms.
I was put on antidepressants a few times, and learned that they do more harm than good.
I've tried natural medicine, which can really help, in addition to counselling. I find that a counsellor can really help you figure out what causes you to be depressed, and if nothing else, they'll help you to think more positively. Even with bipolar, I think this can help you to be more stable, when you're manic, or depressed. You can learn to be more rational and control the severity of these episodes.
As far as natural medicine goes, I've tried some homeopathic medicines, such as nux vomica, which I thought was good. I've also tried st.john's wort, which is really common, but I don't like it much.
5-htp isn't good for me, but it works for some people. It helps with your level of seratonin... but you have to be careful of the brand. There's something called Zenbev (a good brand of 5-htp), which helps to regulate your seratonin and melatonin.
Acupuncture and acupressure are effective for many things. I've only had acupuncture for a cold once, but it really helped.
That's all I can think of for now. I hope it helps.

i would try going to a health store like GNC and getting some "natural" supplements that may help. I have high cholestral but don't want to take the meds that my family doctor wants me to take so i am now taking a combo of fish oil, flax seed oil and also garlic pills, these are all natural and are suppose to help lower my cholestral naturally. Alot of these prescribed meds are really bad for you and i'm already on opiates for pain so i try to not take any more meds than i have to.

if you truly have bipolar, you should not go off your medication. going off your medication can lead to a break down and hospitalization that can take a long time to recover from. alternative remedies do not usually work.

drinking wheatgrass juice...there is a component in it that goes after carcinogenics. Lots of stories of people beating cancer by drinking wheatgrass in books and on the web. Good luck! :)

after thirty years your brain will be significantly diminished if you stay on drugs . At some time you will have to tough it out or give up trying.
