Nah, you aren't alone. I didn't like some aspects of the military when I was in. There are definitely some screwed up rules while you are in and you are being micro-managed the whole time. But when you get out and you move back to your hometown to go to school or whatever, you will miss it. You will miss the good friends you made while you were in, and you will realize most of your old friends are now giant douche bags. Have fun, bide your time, it will pay off in the end.

No you aren't the only one that hates the military, but ask yourself like some have asked you is it your job, your command what exactly do you hate about being in the military? If it's your job then you can reclass, the command, wait out the post and you'll be gone or promotions will take away some of the hatred. Most people are going to respond to this as if they do hate it then that they joined not for war but for college money (pre-9/11 soldiers). If you went in after 9/11 you knew the country was at war so that is no excuse ***still wishing I knew what you hated here*** It is however a vollenteer system and you knew that by signing up what your duties would be (even pre-9/11) soldiers knew that if asked to fight it was in the contract that they had to. There is always the possibility of another Pearl Harbor/9-11 attack.
So just try to make the best of it, just go through the motions of it and your ETS date will be here before you know it. BTW I am not nor have I ever been in but I've lived by Ft. Campbell my entire life and I'm a military historian so I don't know exactly what you are going through but I do to an extent from friends I've heard.

Why exactly did you create this account today, just to come on here and make a comment like that?? I doubt you're even in the military. You're probably one of those people that gets on here, just trying to stir everyone up.
That said, no, we don't hate the military. He's been in 18 years and we love it. It's the best decision we ever made. He still hasn't made up his mind if he'll go over 20 or not. Although, I think he'll get out. It's time to be "normal" again and enjoy our prime years. It's a rough life at times, but it's a damn good life. Sure, there's times in every career where you wonder if you did the right thing. Or, especially in the military, you have a bad day because parts of the system don't work. Doesn't mean that as an overall career it's bad. We honestly don't know anyone who hates it. They all feel the same we do. It's definitely a choice.
IF you are in the military, you made that decision. Now you need to finish your contract and get out if you think it's that bad. Time to suck it up and move on!!
EDIT: I've noticed your update and glad you added that. At least now I know you're just not like some on here just causing to start unrest. And trust me that DOES happen. As far as being brainwashed, I think that's a horrible word and don't appreciate it. Just because you're not happy with your career doesn't mean that those that love and believe in what they do are brainwashed. NObody makes us do this. It's a choice. You're just not happy with yours, so don't try to give those of us that are a bad name. Brainwashed is a lane and horrible term that others feed off of on here.

I noted the response given by the Retired Marine and advise you to read it if you have not already done so and to read it again if you have.
The number one thing about the military is this: It is *not* for everyone. The trouble is, as you are now finding out, that you dont know its too late until its too late...
The military will let you out under a number of circumstances and not all of them are advisable as the above-referenced posting states. However, there are ways and there are ways, and if you are industrious and daring enough, you can get out pretty much unscathed. Probably, you wont be eligible to re-enlist, but if you want out this badly now you wont want back in later...

I hated the first year and a half I was in. I was a firefighter in the Air Force and I was first stationed at Eglin AFB in Florida where I worked with a bunch of whiny civilians that I hated.
Then I deployed to Kuwait (this was a few months before Sept 11) and it dawned on me..."I don't hate the military, I hate where I'm stationed." When I was in Kuwait I thought "Now THIS is why I joined the military!"
From there I went to South Korea and it was the funnest year of my life.
Hang in there and try and get a new assignment.

Steady, friend, ...hang tough. I realize the military isn't the answer for everyone, but don't do anything rash that will affect you for the rest of your life. Try your best to hang in there, ...get some help from your chain of command. Talk to your Chief, Platoon or Staff Sergeant. If that doesn't work, go see a Chaplain. The unfortunate bottom line for you is that you made a commitment to an organization that doesn't just let you walk away if you feel like doing so. Just realize that there are countless resources in the Military (and even in the civilian sector for that matter) that will assist you if you merely ask for their help.
In any case, you've made a sacrifice for your country. Your fellow citizens thank you from the bottom of their hearts and your fellow veterans welcome you to the brotherhood. God bless and hopefully everything will work out for you.

Who's Military ? Which Branch ? How long have you been IN the service, and what are your complaints ?
This seems to be more of a whining session and search for attention and solace.
If you're in the US Military... go see your Chaplain !!
I certainly disliked parts of my 15 yrs of service... back in the days BEFORE satellite TV aboard ship (or in camp), email contact with family & friends, or contractors doing KP !! Try being deployed for 15 straight months with ONLY postal mail for communication.
BUT... you volunteered, and now you're an adult bound to a contract !! Serve your time, or beg and whine your way into a discharge.
Otherwise... stop your crying and stop wasting MY tax dollars.

You aren't the only one. I know quite a few that hate being in the military. A good majority are guys with 10+ years in. I know of a Captain that turned in his resignation even though he was about to get promoted to Rear Admiral Lower Half for the job he had done on the 9/11 investigation. A friend of mine got out after 15 years because of what happened with his report.
It's funny, I see a lot more people doing that under Bush then I did under Clinton.
Just wait it out. That's what I did.

Well I'm a Vietnam vet and was proud to serve and wear the uniform. I did my job the best I could because the Army and Marines were counting on us. (we provided naval gunfire support). On the gun-line one mile off the coast of Vietnam it was hard work being on my ship. I only slept a few hours a day, constant call for fire missions were coming in from Marines ashore.
Hang in there, I'm glad I served since there are a lot of benefits for us vets. You will have priority for jobs and be able to get good medical care from the VA hospitals.
