The only time that I leave food in the grocery cart and walk off is because someone at that particular store has been a real jerk. I pay good money for my groceries, and I think I should be treated with at least a minimum of courtesy when I ask a question.
I don't expect the workers to fall all over themselves, but when I need to know where an item is, I don't want some snide remark. That's when I say, "You know what -- my money spends just as well at another store. Here's your groceries. . .have fun putting them away."
I know that's rude in some ways, but if the store employees want to be nasty or smart alecky, I have no intention of shopping there.

I know for certain why this is.
They come to an item on their list that YOU DON'T CARRY.
They figure if they have to go to another store they'll be waiting in line at that cash register anyway, so why wait in two lines!
And, since you bums didn't carry all the items they needed to buy, as punishment, you get to put all the stuff back that they gathered into their cart so far.
If you work at Vons, you deserve it. Their new higher prices and smaller selection policy combined with a new for 2006 shop in darkness experience really sucks.

I have known to leave stuff in the cart because the lines were so long i mean lines that are going all the way from the cashier onto the middle of an aisle so that could be the case. They may of just realized that they could not afford it.

Since it is up to the cashier to watch the cart and make sure there is nothing in the bottom of the cart... Seems as if the cashier is at fault. But, if you buy a huge cartful of items, you may start putting things on the belt, and run out of room, the next thing you know, the cashier wants your cart, and it happens..

it's a good way to protest! Fill your trolley with Israeli-made produce (to oppose their illegal occuaption of Palestine), Coca-Cola (their anti-union practices in Colombia and use of water in India) Nescafe Coffee (baby-milk in Ethiopia) and then leave the trolley somewhere so these goods cannot be bought by someone else cos they aren't on the shelf.

They changed their mind, they don't want to wait in the queue, they had a phone call and need to leave. It could be a number of reasons and is probably nothing to do with them not being able to afford the stuff.

It's possible they could have been a secret shopper. Sometimes the job is just to enter the store and see how long it takes for service.

If you saw many doing it my guess would be the lines were too long and they couldn't afford to wait and couldn't be bothered to return the items to the shelves...
