How long does it take for a law to become active once passed?

My guess is that nothing will get done. Too many people in government don't want the problem addressed.

Also, there are enough laws on the books now. They just need to be enforced.

Since when do we need to pass laws saying "enforce the laws we already have?"

I would think all we need to do is adequately fund the relevant border and enforcement operations.

Don't count on that happening either.

Different people are waiting for different approaches, and some are mutually exclusive.

If you mean anything like a guest worker program or amnesty (what the Senate and Bush call 'comprehensive') I don't see anything passing until after the elections, earliest, and likely would need to be raised in new legislation next year, if that goes forward.

A border security bill is being voted on in the House today and they intend to come up with a patchwork of other elements before the election, however, they have to pass not only the House but the Senate, as well.

With mid term elections in November, this has been put in the 'back burner' Its not a subject that candidates want to discuss or take side on it. It is such an emotional issue to everyone that they just want to keep away from it.
It's in committee now and not on anyone's agenda to revive b-4 the end of the year.

No, they won't pass and Bush knows it. All the buzz is just so that hispanic people vote Republican next elections, but the Republican majority in the House will definitely not let it pass. Just Bush is trying to play it friends with immigrants, but its just for elections.
