Some molds cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. And a few molds, in the right conditions, produce "mycotoxins," poisonous substances that can make people sick.
The question is, are molds only found on the surface of food?
No, you only see part of the mold on the surface of food -- gray fur on forgotten bologna, fuzzy green dots on bread, white dust on Cheddar, coin-size velvety circles on fruits, and furry growth on the surface of jellies. When a food shows heavy mold growth, “root” threads have invaded it deeply. In dangerous molds, poisonous substances are often contained in and around these threads. In some cases, toxins may have spread throughout the food. So in your case, don't eat the cantaloupe anymore to be on the safe side.

Yes, as long as the inside still looks fresh...
Misconception about mold -
Mold is dangerous because of the spores that can become airborn and attach themselves to the lung tissues when inhaled...
Mold when eaten is not usually a problem and is easily digested....

Yes. You might want to wash it in water with a little bleach and a scrub brush and let it completely dry in the sun first before you cut it open. It is probably a good jucy sweet mellon if the mold favored it.

Mold on the outside does not mean it is spoiled on the inside. Cut it open and it will be quite obvious whether it is too far gone or not.

No. Yuck. The mold will be clear through. Think of it as little feelers inching their way through your food. Same is true of any food with mold, such as bread (the absolute worst) and cheese. Throw it out and get more.
Will you get sick? You could, but probably will just throw up.

if the mold is sparse yes it's ok.. if the thing is completely a ball of mold no it's not.
just cut away the mold and if there's no damage inside where the 'meat' is.. it's edible.

Fruit mold and mildew can cause infections, allergies and respiratory problems not just when eaten, but through breathing in the spores. Some mold produces mycotoxins, which are poisonous. Fresh fruit can be contaminated in the field, during harvest, in the shops or during transportation, so wash your fruit thoroughly when you reach home. Most types of mold grow quickest at higher temperatures, so storing fruit in the fridge will lengthen its life. If you find one isolated patch of mold on firm fruits like apples, it is safe to cut an inch around the moldy part and eat the rest. If there is more than one patch, discard it. In soft fruits like peaches or strawberries, mold spreads quickly, and infected fruit should be thrown away.
