I feel so embarrassed that I dont want to take him out any more, which is a shame because he needs to have exercise and meet other dogs and people. He tries to attack other dogs, should I get him neutered? would this help to calm him down??

Neutering might not be the best answer; if he is set in his ways then having him neutered will not change his behaviour and could even make it worse. That said, he is very young so it might be an option. The suggestion of a 'noise shaker' is very good, but dogs can soon learn to ignore it. More effective in my experience are anti-bark collars and remote command collars. Some anti-bark collars are automated and spray water under the dog's chin when they bark. The dog doesn't like this at all, but soon learns to associate it with the act of barking; hence they usually stop barking.

If he's making to attack dogs when he's out on his lead, then you might find a remote command collar more effective. This is similar to the anti-bark collar, insofar as it has a unit on the collar which goes under the dog's chin, but it also has a remote control unit, which the owner carries. The remote unit has two or three buttons; one to give the dog a warning 'beep' and another which gives the dog a cold spray under the chin. Again, since the unit is remote the dog learns to associate the unwelcome results with certain types of behaviour. There are quite a few makes of these collars, but have a look at Spray Commander.

One downside is that these collars ARE NOT CHEAP, but once the dog has stopped behaving badly you can always try to sell the collar on eBay.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

* Acknowledge your dog’s barking. Sometimes your dog is simply trying to tell you something, and if you acknowledge him, he will often stop barking.

* Teach your dog the “Quiet” command. If your dog keeps on barking after you acknowledge him, say “Quiet” sternly without yelling. If he stops barking, praise him.

* Make a noise shaker. Throw a few coins in an empty water bottle or soda can and tape it shut. If your dog is not responding to your quiet command, shake the can. Dogs really don’t like that sound and will often stop when they hear it.

Watch the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan, on the National Geographic channel. He's amazing when it comes to managing dogs. He does have a website as well. You should check it out. I don't even have a dog, but I like watching his show. The transformations are awesome...

the more you take him out, the less he will bark. He barks because he lacks training and socialisation and a good training class will address both of those areas.

thats the problem with small dogs, kinda like short people...they think they're hard assess. and the funny thing is that theyre not. get rid of him and get you a real dog...a jack russel is the only small dog i'll give credit for, the rest of them.....forget about it!

I'm afraid that's what Yorkies do. They are irritatingly yappy critters.
