We use to give her people food, but now we have decided against it because it's bad for her, but how do we make her stop asking for some when we're eating?

I know it's wrong, but I think it's soooo cute when cats or dogs, beg at the table. It's good that you're being conscious of your pet's health. The only thing to do is just ride it out. Feed her some really yummy food before you eat. Then, while you're eating, try to ignore her. Don't even tell her no. Just ignore her. It's going to take a looooooong time to get her to stop begging, because you've already taught her that eating people food is ok. I guess if worse comes to worst, you can break out the ole spray bottle trick. Good luck with that!

People food is not "bad" for your cat as long as it doesn't replace a normal diet of cat food. Most especially because any cooked meat has no taurine available for the cat, necessary for eye and heart health.

I don't eat a lot of meat in my house and I did a pork loin for company over the weekend. I am eating leftovers and gave some of it to my cats. They like it very much and it's not going to harm them, though pork is not the best choice of meat for a cat. I may have bacon twice a month or so and one of my cats likes to have a small piece that I break off for him. They do like the fat.

If the begging bothers you then you just stop giving food to them and eventually they will stop. If you give in only once in a while you will just be reinforcing this behavior -- intermittent reinforcement is the most powerful kind.

From now on, don't give her any. That's all there is to it. Of course she will still beg for a while. Then the begging will get worse. Because her little cat brain will think "Well they just didn't understand me." so she rub against your legs, cry tap your thigh with her paw and give you the silent meow over and over again. Don't break down. Cats are persistent. Just don't give her anything until she realizes the gravy train don't stop here anymore.
Don't punish her she won't get it.

I use a mist bottle and gently spray water in my cats face. After a while they get the hint not to beg. It took a couple of weeks, but now my cat runs at the sight of the mist bottle. Unless your cat likes water, this should help. Good Luck

I've had one of my cats for 12 years and she begs all the time. We never give her food (our food *L*) but yet she still begs!! Drives me crazy- she'll get right up on me and stare.

You should be proud of yourself that you taught your cat to beg. She knows that if she wants table food she will wait until it's given to her. An untrained cat would just jump on the table and go right to the food.

Perhaps put her in another room while you are eating.
See, you started her off in the 'people food' department so do not blame the cat.
Do not hit her. . . as others suggest.
Just ignore her at best and push her away . .she will learn.
BTW never give her cows milk it will poison her.

I had the same problem with my tabby. I've been trying the old trick of opending a can of kitty food at the same time that we sit down for dinner, so that she has "her " dinner and we have ours...So far it is working...except on nights that we have Popeyes Chicken, her fave.....

Don't give it to her. It will take a while to break her of begging, since she is used to having it.

Also, make sure no one is sneaking anything to her. My father is bad about that with his pets.

Good luck!
