Learn as much about the culture and language as possible. Keep your eyes and ears open. Watch out for your buddies and let them know that you are doing that so that they will be more inclined to watch out for you too. If you do see combat (hope not!) remember your training - you can "freak out" afterwards but you won't have time for it in that situation. Above all else, learn the local customs and as much of the language as possible. The Afghan people can be the best friends you ever had so be nice to them and try to make as many friends as you can. If you have "sixth sense" turn it on and LEAVE it on. NEVER get complacent until you are safely back home. Practice with your weapon until you are very, very good with it - then pray that you never need it - but if you do then you will be prepared. Come home safe buddy - see you when you get back home.

Do it once, do it right, don't do it again.
Grow a beard it helps the locals to relax as you are seen to be a more senior figure, it is also meant to be a sign of authority, it also makes you look like you are trying to follow their customs.
If your water is hot then wet your sock put your water inside it and hang it up this will cool the water down, it wont be like coming out of the fridge but it will be cooler.
Ensure that all metal on metal rifle parts are well lubricated but the outside of the weapon is dry it can be quite a sandy area, or get a bandoleer and make a rifle cover.
Good Luck and be safe
A few funnies but true all the same.......
KLMF Keep Low Move Fast.
Incoming fire has the right of way.

You more that likely will have battle training, just like my friends has done, hes off in 5 weeks. From what I've heard from mates in 3 Para it's not pretty.
All you can do wear your protective clothing at all times, keep your wits about you, keep your head down, sleep and eat when you can. You'll be OK, make sure you have lots of letters and parcels from home, and e blueys specially from your fiancee and mum, you'll get a 20 min phone card a week so use it wisely.
Good luck, Keep safe. We're proud of you and all the lads in the hot sandy places xx

Don't go barging into any unchecked houses screaming....Chuck a couple of grenades in first.
Shoot first ask questions later.
Shoot at the french, even if they put up a white flag.
If your the lucky person that gets to Bin Laden first, don't tell anyone right away, sneak him to your barracks so you and your buddies can cut his nose off, then his balls and so on.
I hope the above survival tips are some use, no seriously look after yourself your a braver man than a lot of people.

Around Afgahns, be respectful but never accept an insult, smile and watch your back. The Afgahns don't have a word for stranger just enemy. Thats you. You can be their friend but it takes a long time and they never fully trust anyone whose grand father wasn't born in their village. The man who smiles the most at you will likely be the one to lead you into a trap.Never eat with you left hand and belch when your done. AND NEVER STARE AT THEIR WOMEN. That you should never do anything else goes without saying. It is better to have blue balls than no balls.

You will now have to bring all your professional skills into play. Taliban are fighters from the Pashtun tribes - the most warrior race of people on earth. Know your enemy. Be a man every second of the time you are there. Believe in your own strength and power. Be just.
May your god bless you and keep you safe, inshallah.
Pashtun woman.

Let me just say, for one, it's spelled AFGHANISTAN. For two, my best survival tip? Don't re-enlist. And if you do, make sure your MOS is NOT infantry. It's like whack a mole over there with them. Poor things, but thats what you get for wanting to play war, at some point, boom, boom you're dead maybe be permanent... and you.

Get yourself a satellite phone for plenty texts to and from home. My man is in Iraq, this phone is our life line. Invest in good polarised sun glasses, anti mosquito stuff, and plenty of luck!
