First of all, it's nine liVes....and they don't. You kill a cat once, it's dead. The nine lives thing is a myth perpetuated by the fact that cats seem extremely lucky (getting out of very close calls).

Cat`s appear to have nine lives because the black & white ones all look alike. So, dont worry you haven`t killed your cat nine times, you have killed yours once along with 8 of your neighbours cats.

I always thought it was supposedly because they have 9 years to each one of our years. (Eg, a 5 year old cat is actually a 45 year old in human terms)
But apparently it's because nine used to be lucky, and cats can bear a lot of er, 'tough love' : http://myquiz.coolquiz.com/trivia/explain/docs/cats2.asp

"One theory on the origin of this expression is that in ancient times nine was a lucky number because it is the Trinity of Trinities. As cats seem able to escape injury time and time again, this lucky number seemed suited to the cat. While in most countries the cat is said to have nine lives, in Arab and Turkish proverbs poor puss has a mere seven lucky lives and in Russia, is said to-survive nine deaths." - http://www.moggies.co.uk/html/pawsproverbs.html

i believe that all cats have at least two lives...about two years ago a cat called Emma died...she was a lovely cat but she had some bad habits and she wasn't perfect...we live next to a primary school and Emma used to love attention so she would wander down when all the kids were going to school and leaving...one day something happened, we suspect one of the kids frightened her onto the road and then she got run over....the couple living in front of us said that they saw her out there....she was pregnant at the time so all of her kittens would of died....but only a bit later we saw a cat that looked just like her that lived around the road...it was probably a boy and even if it was her it didn't have any kittens....i believe that is her though...am i crazy?
