There are all the old standbys that contain acid to break down the skunk spray - tomato juice, pineapple juice, lemon, etc. There are also commercially made deskunkers sold in pet shops and feed stores. I spend a lot of time on hunting dog sites and believe me they do encounter a lot of skunks. The main product that is used with great success (don't laugh, I'm not joking) is massengil feminine douche. For some reason it works exceptionally well on skunked dogs and leads to all kinds of interesting discussions on the message boards every time it comes up.

100% pure Tomato juice does work. The pH of the juice will neutralize the odor from the skunk. I grew up on a farm and we did this all the time to our dogs!! The easiest way to apply it is to pour it in a spray bottle and fully saturate the coat w/ the juice. Make sure it's 100% pure tomato juice and not a variation of tomato and vegetable juice.
Good luck!!

I'm having the same problem myself and have tried everything except the douche (will try that next) - tomato juice, vinegar, 2 different commercial products from the store, scented dog shampoos.
Be careful w the peroxide, it will change the color of the animal and it must be done with fresh, unopened peroxide right away. I didn't have any fresh peroxide and didn't want to change my black lab into a "red" lab so I haven't tried this.
It's been over 3 weeks since the "spraying" and the dogs still have a smell. They are the cleanest, softest ever but still smell.
Someone told me it can take upto 3 months to get rid of the smell!. If you have any luck w any other treatments, PLEASE let me know!

This works awesome....... Good luck.
A formula for neutralizing skunk spray developed
1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide,
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 teaspoon of liquid soap.
Apply it to the sprayed areas, then wash off with tap water. The solution must be mixed as needed; it can't be contained in a bottle.

I don't know why everybody is so freaked out about skunk smell. I really like it? My owner didn't though when I ran into one a couple of years ago. He kept rubbing my fur with tons of tomato juice. It took a few doses before I smelled better. I also enjoyed the odd lick of juice too.

I used tomato juice on my dogs. You do have to let it sit for a while (10-15 minute), but if you keep petting the dog to rub it in, you shouldn't have a problem. I followed it up with a lemon juice rinse and they came out smelling great every time

Tomato juice definitely does NOT work unless you can somehow get your dog to sit in it for a long time. Mine got sprayed and i tried tomato juice twice without it working. The hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap works like magic. Scrub it on your dog and let it sit for a few minutes, then wash them with regular dog soap. You may have to do it twice to be sure but it works like a miracle, good luck!
