teachers hate the fact you are young and so punish you into having homework.

we have all had to do homework, and believe me when i say it doesn't stop when you leave school! you will probably have to work for 12 hours a day (get paid for 8 and a half) then get home and do more work.
honestly, the school years are the best years of your life, the problem is that you don't realise it when you are there. if i could go back and do it all again, including 2-3 hours home work per night, i would, without any question!!

As an ex-teacher, I can comprehensively answer this one. There are several reasons for homework. Firstly, it's designed to reinforce the teaching of that day. Studies have shown that 80% of revision carried out on a given day will be retained in the memory, but that figure decreases as time elapses. This revision is what helps to pass exams.
Honework is also important to engender independent thinking and learning in children, where they begin to take some responsibility for their own learning.
Homework is also set to engender individual time management.
As you can see, I have no problem with homework per se, but it must be achieveable, relevant, sufficient work. Far too often I have seen low quality, inachieveable, irrelevant, simplistic tasks that do not challenge children. It helps if it's fun, too.

Because parents became concerned that their kids were 'falling behind' those in other countries, and asked for more homework.
To my knowledge, most studies have not shown any correlation between more homework and more success, either generally, or even on standardized tests.
The problem with US (and Canadian) schools as they are designed to produce medicrity. Having students perform the same assignments for more hours isn't the solution, more challenging work during class is.

Because if you think you're doing 6.5 hours of work at school, you're on crack. I've got a friend who homeschools her kids, and she gets asked "Does it really take you six hours to get through each day's curriculum?", and her answer is no - not even close. But that's because she doesn't need to make her kids line up to go to recess or art/music/gym class, there's none of this five or ten minutes in between subjects, and most of all she doesn't need to wait for 25-40 yowling brats to sit the f*ck down and shut the f*ck up so the learning process can get started.

Great question. My kids are grown up now, but I never could understand this. I hated them having homework. It always caused rows because they wanted to be out in the garden playing or riding their bikes and other healthy stuff and I had to play the Wicked Witch by virtually chaining them to their desks in their rooms.
I feel that they spend all day shut in class at school and young brains can only absorb just SO much before they glaze over and the information shutters come down.
It might be torture for kids but it's torture for parents too.

As a teacher for lads with severe behaviour problems I have to say that my kids love getting their homework as they know it will be fun to do and help them move on in subjects as well as reinforcing what they have learnt. I have a 100% return rate on my homework and I always mark and return the next day with lots of positive comments and tips. I have to say that no school I have worked in has pupils working for 6.5 hours, the most you do is 5 and if teachers make the lessons fun you really shouldnt mind a bit of homework.

Becuase teachers want you to be able to do the work at home. But still if they want children to lose weight and stuff, why do they give them homework that takes up half the night so you cant ride your bikes and stuff.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that the teachers cant be ar*ed to teach in school and the kids cant be ar*ed to listen.. so they get to do the work in their own time at home without being taught properly... Not like the old days!!

to continue the learning environment at home and get parents involved. to learn crucial information that there might not have been time to learn in class. to test our independance, well thats what they tell us, really its because they want to make our lives miserable and destroy our social lives.
