It is a disease of the teeth resulting in damage to tooth structure. The cavities formed because of dental caries are called tooth or dental cavities. If you have developed black or brown spots of decay on your teeth either in the fissures or on the smooth surfaces and it is associated with discomfort and / or sensitivity to hot and cold and / or frank pain, it is likely that you have tooth decay. Your dentist will carefully examine your teeth and may take X-rays, as some times cavities are not visible to the naked eye. Sometimes the tooth that had had root canal also turn greyish black. This can be corrected by internal bleaching.

Cavities begin when acid, a by-product of the sugar metabolized by the bacteria in your mouth, demineralizes the enamel of a tooth. When the demineraliztion reaches the next layer, called dentin, the process kicks into high gear. As dentin is infected, it turns brown and sometimes black.

Eat a loooot of chocolate and sugar and dont brush your teeth for 10 days at a stretch and then you will know what is a tooth cavity. After tht you would never bother to learn why they are black or blue.
