First you shouldn't have any antibiotic left over from another ailment, unless you were advised by a doctor to stop taking it or you were switched. Stopping taking an antibiotic before the directed end date results in the bacteria becoming resistant to that antibiotic and that's very bad news.
If you have left over antibiotics for proper aforementioned reasons, then the only use you'd have for them now would be if your dentist perscribes the same brand to you.
Tell him that you have some amox left and give date on package and dosage info to him so he can prescribe the new meds less what you have at hand.
He most likely will not perscribe Amox for a dental absess, but if he does great, just make sure you finish his recommended dosage, EVEN IF YOU FEEL BETTER BEFORE IT RUNS OUT. If you get an OK to start with this Amox and then finish with more that you''ll purchase to complete the round,Great. If he prescribes something else throw the left overs out and get the new meds and finish them all. You don't want bacteria harboring in your body due to insuficient completion of antibiotics.

check the exp date written on the bottle as long as it is in capsule form and not liquid it should still be good. the experation date of the medication is always written on the bottle. I would however get into the dentist because you need a full dosage. Anitbiotics should be taken for at least 7 days in full for the whole infection to go away. if not it can come back worse.

always use the entire course of antibiotics even if you feel better. if you don't, the weaken bacteria will survive and be resistant to that antibiotic and soon, none will work for you. my friend's father died because he didnt' take the full course of antibiotics, developed a kidney infection that no antibiotic could cure, and died of kidney failure--because there were no available kidneys for a transplant. and he was a dentist!!! the doctor asked him why he did that since he knew it was wrong, and he said he thought he would be ok. wrong!

Robert, who diagnosed the abscess? That doctor should prescribe the appropriate antibiotic and dosage. The amoxicillin may still be good but not the proper drug and/or amount for your current situation.

It would still be good but you should NEVER SELF MEDICATE. Just call your dentist and most often they will tell you if it is OK or they will write you a new prescription without having to be seen.
