Some approaches that you may want to consider:
1. Find a good psychologist - he/she may help with various cognitive behaviour skills and therapies and try to look at the root emotional cause.
Ask the psychologist whether a visit to a psychiatrist is also required - they focus more on medication.
2. Regular exercise - Both aerobic exercises like walking and something like yoga or taichi. Such exercise will bring balance and harmony to the body and mind.
3. Good sleep. The best hours to sleep are from 9 pm to 4 am. -The body rejuvenates itself best during this time. If she has difficulty sleeping, I find that deep breathing before sleeping helps. Or putting on some soothing music also helps.
Hope your mum gets better and good luck to you.

St John's Wart tablets r a natural herbal alternative to help with depression. But Hun, alot depends on how depressed ur mum is n if she's on any medication already. The biggest thing u can do is help her: help do the dishes, ask her how she's feelin, ask her if she wants u two to cook dinner together..... that kinda day to day stuff. Have u got someone to talk to who knows the situation? Cuz u need support too. Good luck, u'll find the light at the end of that tunnel everyone keeps talkin about....don't worry.Ur mum sounds very lucky to have a daughter like u! I hope my lil girl grows up as thoughtful as u.

Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine and Prescription for Natural Cures list a lot of alternatives, but both agree strongly that serious depression needs to be treated by psychiatrists or doctors who are trained to deal with this severe and dangerous disease. If it really is serious, please get the best help you can.
Good luck and God bless!

If she has serious depression, she should be seeing a psychiatrist. Really serious depression may be treated with Electro convulsive therapy (ECT) as a last resort, but meds usually can control the depression.

there is a awsome self help book on the market... self matters by Dr phil... it snapped me out of the darkest part of my life... made me see things SOOO much clearer... seriously get it for her, buy her a cute little notebook to go with it and tell her for christmas or her birthday you want her to read this book.... if she refuses to read it, she doesnt want to try to do anything to help herself, she doesnt want fixed, and theres something motovating her to stay in this dark hole, shes getting some benifit from it, attention maybe? Is your mom overweight? Coming straight from my doctors mouth word for word "I cant stand doctors that just throw people on anti-depressants with out checking to see if they have healthy tyroid levels" more or less if she is over weight, it might stem from her tyroid being out of wack, if thats the case it can cause depression. Some doctors will throw you on medication as a "bandaid" to the real issue... there could be a biological reason why your moms depressed such as something like this is going on... if shes willing to seek help tell her to go see a psyhcitrist... a MD (medical doctor) specialized in mental problems more or less, can understands the body and how if the body is out of wack how it can make the brain act out of wack also. Plus he knows what tests to run and what medication to counteract if something is off balance... plus s/he is also trained in psychotherapy if your mom just needs a good mental tune up with out medication.... basicly she can try the book on for size and if that doesnt work seek a professional... :)

I have a neighbour who is seriously depressed and I think the thing that helps her most is that she is thought of and feels loved .......foods that give a natural high are good.
