Sony cameras used in medical instruments are about 8mm in diameter and very robust. Ones that go into covert cameras that could be hidden in clocks, exit signs, electrical outlets, etc are smaller than that but need a small circuit board to hold them so they are not as compact in total. These are all color video cameras.
