I found this question to be quite interesting.
I first came here because I received an email from Yahoo advertising this forum to be something like Answers.com --the idea of a serious, academic, authoritative website seemed quite appealling. I had and continue to have some free time right now while I recover from surgery, and it seemed like a good way to distract myself from aches and pains.
At first I did feel disappointed that there was too much chatter, too many non-serious people, too many spelling errors, too many short, undocumented answers, repeated questions over and over, etc. It seemed like a failure from what Yahoo intended.
In time, though, I did find that it was the regulars who actually made me want to stick around. So many here are fascinating people -- I am astounded at some of the things that people come up with--the creative pool here is amazing.
I wish there were a better structuring so that authoritative answers might be in a different place from the more conversational/discussion, but I would not want the "regulars" to be discouraged or banished -- they really are witty, interesting, funny, provocative people that make this place enjoyable.

Not at all, the regulars are what keeps this going, and interesting. It's always been like this, and did the person who emailed you ever stop to think that we'd like to actually participate in some real discussions...not preaching sessions. This is a discussion group, not a church.

The assertion that they want this to be "... a place to ask questions and have them answered" is a canard. They aren't seeking answers... they are seeking validation. They don't want to read anything that stirs their brain to a state of 'cognitive dissonance'... they seek onlt the warm fuzzy feeling that arises from 'cognitive harmony'. This is perfectly understandable, I guess, considering that most of them lack the critical thinking skills to resolve cognitive dissonence, so a lot of these answers from free thinkers must leave them quite distressed. That's too bad... but I'm afraid that from my point of view, that just falls under the category of 'collateral damage'. I think it is my ethical and moral duty to intervene in an effort to protect vulnerably minds that might otherwise become infected by the insidious communicable delusion known as Christianity.

Being one, I'd say the regulars before I came made the R+S section for me. I used to be all over Football(American) before I came here. I stayed, and now am a regular among the rest of ye.
P.S. Your questions always automatically have a thumbs down everytime I see them..

I don't see how anyone can ruin a site like this. If i don't like a question, i don't answer it! If i dont like an answer, i give it a thumbs down. I like seeing some of the regulars funny q&a.

I don't mind the "regulars", I just don't like it when they post ten to twenty meaningless questions in an hour.
It makes the "real" questions get lost in the babble.
I also do not like the bad language and porno avatars, people should have some self-respect and some respect for the young people who come here.

There are some jerks, some deep thinkers, some court jesters and some nitwits. It's an open forum. I don't see how anyone's participation is inherently bad. Whatever I don't like is easily enough ignored.

I hope not, some questions are meant to be serious and I answer them in that manner or I pass them over. If they were asked in jest I answer that way- or give an answer that I at least I think is funny (it might not be)

I do not come here to entertain or be entertained. I come here to learn, teach, think, and perhaps make another person think. But I am not sure if anyone here has "ruined it" for anyone else.

Yes, and yes. Some ruin the section, others are entertaining and thought provoking.
