I suspect a point and shoot will be in your price range.. you don't say what kinds of pictures you will be taking. If you wanted professional quality camera with interchangeable lens I would say Olympus evolt e300 or e500 but these are probably more than you want to spend. (prices run from just under 500 to a grand) Which is why I think a point and shoot is what you are looking for. there are many really good ones out there.. what you need to look at and compare are the mega pixels. I would not go below like 6 mega pixels, and would get the highest mega pixel camera I could afford. (you can get really fine pictures from a point and shoot, it is just a bit more of a challenge than having a camera you can over ride all the auto settings on.)
Here is a site with links down the left side for camera deals.. (and on the page as I recall) http://www.silvaspoon.net/cameras.html
There is also advise on cameras. A photography blog that might also help you is at

I do no tknow if $380 is a lot of money for you or not, but I just bought a Cannon SR3 and am amazed at the clarity. With some reading and practice I have figured out how to take photos at less than the 6 meg per picture, which is nice if you want to e-mail photos.
And when you want prints they look pretty good too.

You can shoot right out of the box but you get the best results if you read the book and try different things out first. You will need another memory card and some rechargeable batteries, but you can get those locally or not.
Right now is a good time to buy cameras. They seem to be going down in price.

At Amazon they show you photos and have reviews you might want to check out :

I am not sure if they have the best prices. But generally it is safe to buy form them.
Good Luck.

Canon would be the best brand if you're looking for image quality. The Canon a520 worked excellent for me until I upgraded to a more expensive camera; perfect combination of image quality and price (around $150 range by now online). It has 4 megapixels, which is excellent for taking pics to put on the comp or making prints up to 8x10 sizes. It takes 2 AA batteries and you will want a camera that takes regualr AA batteries; you can get them anywhere cheap and you have the option to get rechargable ones. The a520 is wholeheartedly recommended for a budget camera by me from experience.

Take a look at Panasonic Lumix series with a Leica lens. They
have a full range of prices. The best with a 12x zoom lens goes
for $500 but it is the best return for your money. Always look
for zoom lenses and not digital zoom which will only spoil your
pictures and you can zoom in your computer by cropping.
For a wider choice look for Nikon, Canon, Leica or Schneider
lenses, they are the best. Go for quality pixels and not quantity
pixels.

You can usually get a deal on various older model digital cameras if you know where to shop. Your best bet is to stick to Canon. Here is a list of cameras with links to good prices for them. Many of the newer ones are reviewed by a professional photographer.

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraList.php

If you scroll down the list you will see that the cheapest Canon is the PowerShot A430. From Pricegrabber, it looks like it could be yours for about $140 including shipping.

Note that you will also need a memory card for your camera, although a tiny one comes with it. The best prices for these are at Pricegrabber.com. Since this is a 4 megapixel camera, you only need like a 512 MB Secure Digital (also known as SD) memory card. They cost about $10 to $15 plus shipping if you buy from Pricegrabber.

If you look for a camera under £100 then Samsung A503 or S500 should be a decent choice. Both camera are 5 megapixel which enough for taking pics. However A503 doesn't have optical zoom. (which S500 has 3x optical zoom). It's not a big problem if you don't need a zoom function.

Samsung A503 - £74.99

You need to research based on what your needs are. Are you looking for professional quality pics (high resolution), or are you looking for a camera you can stuff in your shirt pocket? Is video clips important? Etc...

Canon Powershot A620. Get it in the US on Amazon for $220. I just got one and love it. I checked amazon.co.uk and it costs a lot more.
It has good customer reviews.

First, fix a budget for yourself. Read magazine articles (you don't have to buy them) to clue up on what features are available and which of them you require. Read comparitive tests on cameras that fit your bill then choose.
