Royal icing is, like, a pound of powdered sugar and 1 or 2 egg whites! It dries very hard and IMO doesn't taste very good - it is best used for decorating things like gingerbread houses because it works very well as a "glue" to hold the candies on!

I'm actually willing to bet the woman's wedding cake was covered in rolled fondant. *That* stuff is reeeeeally nice for cake decorating if you know how to handle it - it gives a verrrrrry smooth surface.

You can cover a cake with royal icing but it will be very very sweet! What kind of cake is it you're making?? If it's just you're average kinda cake, i'd recommend putting butter icing on, but using margarine instead of butter, it's really yummy, and not too sweet - i find using butter makes it too sweet. Good luck x

Fondant is better. It tastes better and it's just as beautiful. Just don't do it last minute for the first time for a special occasion, because you may have to do it a couple of times.
