Protagoras, a Greek philosopher(born 485, Abdera, Greece-died c. 410 BC) is well known for this dictum. He held that each man is the standard of what is true to himself, that all truth is relative to the individual who holds it and can have no validity beyond him.
His saying has never been clearly understood and it passed down without any clear context. 'Man' however in this dictum refers to mankind as a whole.
