I just read an article that said if you wear a flower inyour hair, squat to their level when taking the order or smiley faces on the check will get you better tips. Any other ideas?

Finding out their names...remembering what they usually have....silent service is a big one also, without them having to ask, anticipate their needs, bring them extra napkins, condiments, wet naps, refill their drinks, all of these without them asking. This will make you better tips, another thing that I did, that some people cannot do but it impresses people.....remember their orders without writing them down, you know maybe for like a party of 6 or less would be pretty easy....it works like a charm!!! Good Luck and flirt your booty off!!!

And Bridgett, did you used to work for applebees....sounds like it!!!

1. Be polite. 2. Make sure the order is on time and correct. 3. A little perfume is ok, but don't bathe in it. 4. If it's appropriate, lightly squeeze the customer's bicep area as you hand them the check. It personalizes the meal. But, don't do this if it's a arguing couple, a flirty person you're not interested in, or an angry person. 5. Listen to what they say. Make good eye contact. 6. Don't gossip to the customer. 7. Refill the drinks without asking if they want a refill. 8. Bring ketchup with all burgers and fries. Don't make them ask for it. 9. Thank the customer for coming. It'll make them feel important. 10. Don't worry about other tables/waitresses. That's someone else's problem. And forget about the smiley face on the check. I've always thought that to be cheesy.

Hmmmm. How about doing the best job you can given your present predicament. Be yourself, if the service was good you should get a tip that's commensurate with the dining experience. (anyone can see through a s s kissing and its uncomfortable) If not look at your dress, hygiene, physical appearance, attitude, work ethics, etc.
A tip is a personal reflection of what the guest(s) thought of your service or the total dining experience. If you get a bad tip, or no tip at all don't blame the guest(s). There may be other reasons. Its not all about you. As a guest dining in your restaurant, I am not responsible for you to have what you think is enough money in your pocket.

Denise W that was a great answer. If I knew a server went through that amount of trouble, and paid that much attention to detail, I would ensure that they received a great tip. Unfortunately, more often than not its the same old, same old. Great answer, I hope the right people are reading these posts.

Give good service? Nothing will alter a server's tip like being attentive. Don't let drinks get below 1/3 without asking if they need another (got to factor in the time it takes you to get it so they're never empty). Don't rush the guest. Feel them out and joke with them if it's a social event, but be a bit more distant if it's a date. The reason people with flowers, smiley faces, etc get more tips is because it's part of their personality. Flowers don't make anyone tip more. If you're lazy and rude, no amount of flowers can overcome that.

I think timing when you come to the table counts too. Try not to break through an intense moment to bring more water.

Aside from that? Work at a place that serves liquor and keep the drinks flowing. Drinks = tips.

No, but being pleasant, knowing what is on the menu, vs what they have & getting orders right & being attentive will get a good tip in my book. My friend shouldn't have to ask for a refill of coffee, etc...

I think it all depends on the type of establishment you are working in. If you do these things working at Applebee's, I think patrons would like it. But, I think if you exhibited this behavior at a Houston's - I'm trying to think of another chain that is seen as being more upscale - it might be considered unprofessional.

I do believe, that no matter what type of establishment you work in - that good hygiene and impeccable dress always impress.

Servers can increase their tips by giving their names to customers, squatting next to tables, touching their customers, and giving their customers after-dinner mints.

Drawing a smiley face on the check increases a waitress's tips by 18 percent but decreases a waiter's tips by 9 percent.

In one study, waitresses increased their tips by 17 percent by wearing flowers in their hair. In general it pays to look distinctive albeit not freaky.

Repeat customers orders

Smile!

Write Thank You on checks
