My son has gotten into the habit of letting out this high pitch screech-like scream. Usually for no apparent reason. I don't understand why. The pitch is usually so high that it actually ignites severe headaches. How can I break him of this? I've tried everything from lightly smacking his mouth and telling him "no", to time out, and even whispering to him (so he copies my action and whispers too). Help!! Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

You sound like me. My son is 18 months too and screams just like that. It also gives me insane headaches. Unfortunately it is just a phase, he realized he can scream really loud and to him it sounds pretty cool. Like most new things, he'll eventually stop doing it. I usually try to take a nap when he does to sleep off the headache. Good luck. Let me know if you find something that stops the screaming! LOL.

Sounds like a serious problem. You need to find out where that came from and why it started. Do you leave him with other people? If so, have him go near those people one by one and not on the same day, and if he refuses and starts to scream again, then you may get your answer. Talk to a professional about it. Please do not smack the child in any way cause that will not solve anything. Sit him down and give him things to do. Maybe he is bored and wants attention. Get a coloring book out and color with him, once he is happy with that, leave him to it and he should be ok. Give him other things to play with as well. Don't ever punish a child without really knowing why he is doing what he does. Kids don't understand punishment at a young age. He will only think you are being a bad mommy and he will carry on with this behavior. Good luck!

He WILL grow out of it. Just hold on. The good thing is that his vocal cords are constantly changing as he grows. Not reacting to it at all is your best bet. How many times do kids just go ahead and do what we've told them not to, just because we've told them not to?

Sorry, it is a phase. Lasts about 6 months. Ear plugs is the best answer.

time for a big paddle

a few hard smacks he will learn

or lock him in a closet until he stops

it is all about learned behavior and time out is not too bad of a thing

a good leather belt would fix this in about a day or two
