Does this happen to anyone else? It is ruining our new sofa, and we keep cleaning it the best we can, but she is destroying it. I tried No-Go, which is sold at the pet store and supposed to keep them from going on stuff. Their litter boxes are always clean. A few years ago, I took my cat to the vet and she told be that my cat is depressed and needs some Prozac, seriously, but how is one supposed to afford/believe that? Any ideas? (BTW, we have 3 cats, and all are fixed except one, and age from 3-8 years old.)

Boo to lame/mean answers. The sofa is rather new and not too dirty. I have no idea how to train my cat not to. Do females really mark their territory?

One is the mother, the daughter of course, and another female from a different family. (Molly, Fefe, Lilly.) I don't want to give them away, but it is really hard to keep them when they have this problem.

I think the reason is territorial marking - you do say the sofa is new. The cat that is highest in the heirarchy of the 3 is marking the sofa.

What I would try is: keep the cat (or all the cats) away from the sofa for a few days (especially when you're not there to observe her). Praise her every time she goes in the litterbox.

Allow the cat in the same room as the sofa _only_ when you're there and can pay attention to her. When she starts preparing to pee sniffing around on the sofa, crouching, etc., pick her up and closet yourself with the cat and the litterbox in another room / bathroom. When she uses the litterbox, praise her.

Another version... put aluminum foil or double-sided tape for a while on the sofa. That should keep the cats from going up on it. Aluminum foil may be removed when there are guests / the sofa will be used very easily...

As long as nothing is physically wrong, I've found that the biggest reason for this kind of behavior is that he's trying to make a point. When possible, it's best to figure out what his need is and meet it. Better to solve the problem than to punish for the symptom. Maybe he does it when you've left him alone longer than usual. I knew a cat who did this because he was lonely. His owners spent more time with him and he stopped doing it. Litter box problems are also a common cause, but it sounds like you have that one under control. Putting him outside for the evening might just make whatever the problem is worse. He won't get why you're doing it and it could cause resentment. Giving him a little spritz of water could help, but be careful about doing it too much. I've used that technique, it's actually just about the only discipline you can use on a cat, in my opinion, but overuse can make a cat jumpy and unhappy. Make sure you do it immediately (if you wait, he won't understand why you did it) and praise him when he responds in the way you want. There are products that well repel a cat from a specific spot (I think Bitter Apple is one) and using them is better than yelling or getting frustrated. I'm just worried that in your case, keeping him off the sofa won't solve the problem, it'll just make him pee on something else. However, it might buy you some time to figure it out. In the meantime, use Nature's Miracle for the smell. It's the only thing that works, I've even used it on clothes! Get it at a pet store and follow the directions on the bottle (except I never bother with the foil). If the smell lingers, get a black light bulb, florescent is best, at a lighting store and it will show up any drops you've missed. Matisse -- good name!

First of all, In my opinion, do not use a water spray bottle on your pet. It will only stress it out more as any physical discipline will. Second, cleaning the litter boxes daily may help. Cats like clean litterboxes. I prefer the scoopable litter. Makes cleaning much easier. Third, if your cat has already peed on your sofa, how did you get the scent out? Try using those enzyme cleaners which eat the odor causing bacteria, You do not want the cat returning to urinate or spray in the same place. It sounds like he is trying to communicate something. He is unhappy about something. Get a sisal rope scratching post sprinkled with catnip? This might get his mind off what is bothering him. Place a washable waterproof mattress cover with fitted sheet temporarily over your couch. The urine won't soak into your sofas fabric and you can wash out the accidents. Do you give your kitty attention for 10-15 minutes immediately when you come home from work or do you just ignore him? Try giving it more attention, toys, catnip, calm environment, and treats now and then. Maybe it is just seeking more attention. If he does pee on the sofa while you are home don't yell at it or punish it in any way. This will only create stress for him. Gently pick him up and place him in a just cleaned litter box and sroke his head afterwards. Reward his good behaviour when he does pee in the litter box with a treat, extra attention, or catnip and he may eventually learn that using the litter box is a positive experience. Also, I believe many things can upset animals, like household commotion, loud music or noises, harsh or toxic cleaning chemicals or room and carpet deodorizors. Do some more research online. there is a wealth of information out there and something will work. It just takes time, patience, compassion, and understanding. Good Luck.

hate to say it but you may have to get rid of the sofa...once cats smell their own pee on stuff they usually won't stop going there. try no sofa first maybe you can store it or if not try to wrap in plastic, may look ugly (you know the plastic couch covers that alot of old ladies put over their furniture to keep it new looking) but the cat won't like the feel. don't let her on the couch at all while you are training her. when she gets up there spray her with water (from squirt bottle) this is how i trained my cats not to pee in the house plants. some females do mark their territory especially when they are not fixed and other cats are around. when she does use the litter box give her lots of praise and treats (mine love pounce treats and they're very cheap and easy to find in any grocery store) . for depression make sure she's healthy, feed her good food, some have sensitive tummy's and when they don't feel well they get sad. look at the ingredients, the first on the list should be meat or chicken...no bi-products or corn meal should be listed first. give her lots of cat toys and maybe a scratching post and a bed. if she feels like she has her own things she may not want to mark all of yours so much...rub cat nip on her stuff so she can smell that it is hers and don't get any on the furniture. good luck

Well really I have seven cats and it is unknown why cats do alot of things.Everybody has there opinion but they are not 100% sure why cats do certain things.I've had cats all of my life and I 've noticed that ALL cats are different. Some are very loyal. Some are evil. Some you just can't do nothing about.Think of them as humans. The same rule goes with them.Just like these morons that answer these questions. Some are alot of help and other you wish you could Email them back to tell them off. haha.Anyways, I have cats that need to be trained and I keep them in the bathroom on a leash right next to there litter box.Every once in a while I will let them loose to get some exercise and play with them.I watch them all the time. Then I put them back in the bathroom and show them the litter box. It's been working great.Try that and see if it works. And don't listen to these morons that tell you that your couch is dirty because I'm a clean freak and they still do it to me.

Believe it or not,If you have a Leather Sofa?,(like we do) My cat felt threatened by the leather.I believe he can smell the "Cow" in it.I was joking with my wife that he is probably saying "Where did all these COWs come from?"

The second question I have is ,Is the cat that's peeing,Fixed? I noticed you said you have 3 cats and one is not fixed. It could be that the UN fixed cat is feeling threatened and wants to mark a spot for himself. The peeing is a kind of spraying it sounds like.
