I have seen a scrabble game made in java and also the nintendo game, advance wars made as well.
You will need java swing and also you need to have a good concept on how the game will work. When you have those ingredients, then it is just putting it together.
Make sure you draw a UML diagram before you start, noting down methods you may use and how the system overall will interact.

You can make a software of Game in java but I don't know your level of Knowledge.
So I write you First you learn Basic Java then learn Advance Java.
I hope After it you can developed Game Software in Java.
