I have a friend who donated sperm in 2000 and is keen to know if any children were born of his donation. The clinic he donated to will not divulge the information as the donation was made prior to the change in law of April this year. He was under the impression that he would be able to find out at some point if any children were born. Can the HFEA provide this information?

They are not allowed to provide this information, and likely would not be able to have done so even before the new HIPPA laws went into effect. They should have informed him of this during the donation process. People are very private about their fertility and if they were artificially inseminated, even more so. His sperm are anonymous now. They belong to whoever received them.

I would advise your friend to leave this well alone. If he does manage to get the information that he wants, what is he going to do with it? Track these children down, go to there homes and then say "hello i'm your Daddy". He would destroy lives!!! He knew the situation when he donated.

No I think he is out on this one. His best bet is if he did have any children. When they get 18 they can contact him. So he needs to keeps his address up to date at least 17 years after his first donation.

No I doubt it. When he donated the sperm, it comes with an anonymity clause that he will never know the results of his donation - he signed away his DNA - it's not his anymore.

he is hosed. Some woman will use that sperm and then hit him up for child support, tell him next time he wants to donate sperm to go to a bar he has never been to before, pick up some skank and give her a fake name, donate, then leave before she gets up the next morning, that way he gets to donate but doesn't have to worry about complications.

He should leave his one alone IMHO because the families that used his sperm are just that, Families. what does he hope to gain from finging out if he has 1, 2 or 50 "biological" children out there?
