He was a member of the Hitler Youth, which was pretty much mandatory. Had he been an SS soldier, he would be well into his 80s at the least. Doesn't mean he isn't a jerk (as all Popes are) anyway.

Seems to me that any one forced by GERMAN regulation to become a member of the Hitlerjugend at age 14, and drafted out a seminary with the aid of GERMAN law at age 16 to serve within the army would no longer be a very willing soldier. Pope Benedict was under no circumstances a member of the Nazi party, and he deserted on the first possibility. There is no evidence or claim that he ever took any active part in behalf of the German army (absolutely the Luftwaffe due to the fact that he used to be assigned to a flak gun unit). He used to be no longer required to take an lively section anyway, as a result of illness. Pope Benedict, a.Okay.A. Joseph Ratzinger, was once born in 1929. You do the mathematics. He was once 16 years historical when the WW2 ended in 1945..

From a non-believer.

In all fairness to my Catholic friends, the Pope's military activity seems to have been limited to manning an anti-aircraft battery near a BMW plant - and not much else. For one thing, his service started in the last weeks of the Third Reich (mid-April '45). It seems he didn't even see combat against the Allied troops. It looks like he also deserted the German army sometime in the last 2 weeks of combat and went home. (American forces then forced him to go to a POW area.)

You should also know that his family, especially his father, were anti-Nazi. In short, while I might not have voted for a former SS soldier as Pope out of instinct, there's not much to condemn otherwise. The Hitler-Youth stint was actually mandatory by the time he and his brother joined.

The pope may or may not have killed anyone as a Nazi youth (many of them did) but Hitler was a devout Christian who believed he was doing "God's" work by exterminating Christ-killers. This is a bit of historical fact Christianity tries to disown, but Hitler was a religious man.

He was no Nazi SS soldier. He was part of Hitler Jugend (youth). Every teen at that time had 2 choices: join or be shot dead. Learn some history! Why don't you people accept the truth and respect Christianity? And go ahead report me, I don't give a ****!

He was not an SS member you nut, he was in Hitler's youth camp. Most of them did not have an option and none of the youth did the killing. He cannot help it if he was put in the youth camp any more than the Jewish youths could help being sent to death camps. They were not given a choice. This was a place for Hitler to indoctrinate the so-called perfect Aryan youths to his beliefs. In short, not all in fact most of them did not get indoctrinated because they were not there long enough thank God.

Benedict, our Holy Father, was not a Nazi and he killed no one.

He was drafted into the German army. And he deserted the army, like thousands of others, when he found out what was going on.
