3/4 bottles of peroxide and I put about 1/2 cup baking soda and then put 1 tablespoon of dish washing liquid in the mix (all depends on the size of the dog you can make a smaller or larger batch.....wash out side if you can...and of course the coat will look real clean with the peroxide but this recipe 'works like a charm'...I have had to use is a few times....I would wash the animal and really work up a lather and then rinse well.....I only once ever had to repeat it a second time because I did not work the lather up well enough the first.

DEODORIZE SKUNK SPRAY
Neutralize skunk odor.

To neutralize or deodorize skunk spray, the chemicals in the secretion must be changed to a different type of molecule. Tomato juice does not work (see below for an explanation).
For pets that have been sprayed, bathe the animal in a mixture of
1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from drug store)
1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon of liquid detergent.
After 5 minutes rinse the animal with water. Repeat if necessary. The mixture must be used after mixing and will not work if it is stored for any length of time. DO NOT STORE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER - it releases oxygen gas so it could break the container. This mixture may bleach the pet's hair.
Some additional tips. Do this outside so the volatile skunk spray does not contaminate your house. To remove residual skunk odor from your clothes and any towels or rags used in this clean up procedure, wash them with one cup of liquid laundry bleach per gallon of water.
For buildings, decks, etc., a solution of liquid laundry (Chlorox®) bleach (1 cup per gallon) will work. CAUTION - THIS MAY BLEACH THE BUILDINGS, DECKS, ETC. Try it on a small area if bleaching may be a problem. The bleach must come in contact with the spot where the secretion was sprayed Repeated applications may be necessary for large amounts of the skunk spray. DO NOT USE THIS ON PETS. It will not work for skunk spray that has drifted over a large area or is trapped in a house. Only time and adequate ventilation will help in this case.
Why tomato juice is believed to eliminate skunk odor. Bathing an animal in tomato juice seems to work because at high doses of skunk spray the human nose quits smelling the odor (olfactory fatigue). When this happens, the odor of tomato juice can easily be detected. A person suffering olfactory fatigue to skunk spray will swear that the skunk odor is gone and was neutralized by the tomato juice. Another person coming on the scene at this point will readily confirm that the skunk spray has not been neutralized by the tomato juice.

HA HA HA!
Had to laugh cause I had that problem too. We used tomato juice. It worked ok. Now they have this new Dawn dish detergent that has the smell killer stuff in it. I wish they had it then. But I have used it on other smells like fish and onions and it got the smell out. Worth a try. Didn't know about the other home remedy with the peroxide and baking soda. Wish I did.

There is a product call Natures Miracle Skunk remover. You can find it at Petsmart or Petco. Awesome stuff. You might have to use it a couple times but it works very well.

Tomato sauce is supposed to remove skunk smell, so is oatmeal. Give your dog a bath in one of those or you could call a vet and see if they sell something for that purpose. Good luck.

If you can find it, the old time Massengill Douche powder (yellow medicinal-smelling powder) mixed with water as directed on the package for its intended purpose works great. (Probably for the same reason it worked well for its intended purpose!) Once you've mixed it up, put it in a spray bottle and spray the dog down (do not spray into eyes, nose or mouth!) Leave on for about 5 minutes, then shampoo dog thoroughly with a moisturizing dog shampoo.

If the tomato juice doesn't work, the vet carries a skunk-off shampoo.

wash them in tomato juice. sounds crazy but it works. We are in a wooded area. My mother-in-law told me about this and I thought she was crazy but it works. Careful around the eyes and ears. Good luck!

Tomato juice (not sauce) works some. I've found if you follow with lemon juice that it works better.
