the earth's atmosphere consists of elements like nitrogen and oxygen. Space is void of any elements (a vacuum). The earth's atmosphere acts as a barrier to space and is required to maintain life on earth.

U can live in earths atmosphere and not in space. U need a source of oxygen if u go above 18,000 ft. The nominal ox. is 20.9 and the lowest livable alarm point is 19.5,if u go below that u will pass out.
