Only if they really want to. My 5 year old went to judo a couple of times but pulled out as she didn't want to go. You should introduce your child to a class and just see how they take to it. Don't force them if they really don't want to.

Yes. In a judo course the child should be OK physically - when the others are in the same age group - and the learning is not only self-defence but also discipline, self-control, precision, quick thinking and reacting, sportsmanship, clubmanship, pride in performance and comradeship. That's just off the cuff, there's probably more. Self-defence is often knowing how to respond by disarming an attacker too. The earlier the learning the better for life, I'd say. Avoid sports that use a weapon however, obviously. Find a good judo dojo (gym) near you. Tell the sensei (coach) your concerns for your child prior to enrolment. We presume the child is physically fit and of normal intelligence.

If 5 year olds can start to learn Ballet, then i'm sure that Self-Defence should be just as good for children to learn.

I think that it would really help them, with confidence. I learned Shotokan Karate upto the 1st few grades at 6th form college, but there were lots of small children there starting the grades.

I think that if they can follow what is going on, then they could probably benefit a lot from it, if you can afford the class fees!

Also, things like Tai Kwan Do are great for self-control and are almost like Buddhis Meditation!

Personally i would let a 5 year old take up self defence classes as it not only teaches them to protect themselves it also helps them learn discipline and how to control temper. In this day and age it is important that life lessons are learnt early and this could be the perfect start!

Yes, but make sure the Sensai doesn't just teach the techniques, make sure they teache when to apply them, so that your child gets the full benefits of learning Self Delence.

I would look for a proper Do-Jo, not one that does it at your local school, or youth Centre.

In short ensure that your child understands its for seld defence only.

i think any age is the best to take up self defence cause there is alot of bad people about like ian huntley who killed two children for no reason so i think kids of any age should take up self defence to protect themselfs plus they will be able to protect others.

Certainly
Aikido would be good as it is fairly low impact. Alternatively look for general self defence classes that are tailored towawards youngsters
