When there's a tragic news story the reports are minute to minute and see the same images over and over again. Is this just spreading the trauma? Should we limit our exposure to simply gathering the information and switching off the television?

Human beings are strange people...a lot of us need to see the graphics. Me personally, it upsets me, and yes I turn off the television when I am getting distressed. I live in Australia and there was a terrible train disaster. I lived at Granville at the time, and when I came home from work, there were people, women, children, babies crowded onto the bridge above the wreckage. I couldnt believe what I was seeing because the rescuers were still bringing out people....there were still dead people inside. I was horrified...I couldnt even look.

Unfortunately though good news doesnt sell newspapers, which I think proves my point. I rarely watch television these days. I dont buy the newspaper for the very reasons I spoke of. It is full of tragedy and suffering. I do not know the reason why people enjoy seeing misery, but you just have to look at the passers by of a motor vehicle accident...most people will look to see what has happened...I dont know if its curiosity or whether they enjoy seeing mangled up bodies. Who knows, the media know however and that is why they graphically display pictures of horrific events because thats what most people like to see.

because new people are joining in all the time when big news stories happen and the first thing they want to see are the images of the news event....

Yes, gather the information and go on to something else... you can always check back in an hour for updates....

I don't watch 'news' programs, they are nothing more than a horror show designed to keep people afraid. If I want 'news' I read it.
