Telling someone to "get a life" is an insult. What they're saying is that you have no life to speak of or that your life is lame, stupid, pointless, etc. There was a TV show a while back called "Get a Life" where the main character was 30 years old, had a paper route, and still lived at home with his parents. The worst thing was he didn't see anything wrong with that. Does that give you a better idea? It's basically like stereotyping someone as a computer nerd that spends all of his/her free time typing on a computer instead of interacting with people. Uh-oh, does that mean I need to get a life?

I believe this is generally said when someone feels that you are spending too much time or attention on something that they do not think is important. It is a matter of values. I read alot. Some people feel I need to get a life. Some people concentrate their energy on keeping a perfectly clean house, I say get a life. It is all a matter of your priorities and thinking that people with different priorities are missing the good things in life. Just a matter of perspective.

It can be used as a joke or an insult. Sometimes, among friends if you are trying to get a friend to see logic or help them thru an inactive slum....c'mon...get a life...get out there touch the world be a part of it all...also used if you are super focused on one thing and someone uses it to tell you...shake it off...make a change...you aren't seeing everything else!
An insult? You are paying too much attention to their business and not enough to your own! Also used to project that a person thinks you are extremely dull, clueless to social mores...like c'mon get a clue dummy!

It is a sarcastic remark as a retort to either your behavior or things that you might have said that seem minuscule to the individual making that remark.
In other words something that you might have said or done irritated the person making that remark, and they do not take you seriously in your opinions or point of view.
Hope that helps!
So if someone irritates you and annoys you ..just say "Get a Life " !!

It usually means that they think you've been cooped up to long and have lost touch with the "now" part of the world. Or that you're spending too much time focusing on only one thing. Or that you're inexperienced and should get out a little more.
Mostly, it depends on what you said to bring this comment on.

it means "STOP WASTING YOUR #$^&@*! TIME WITH THAT THING!!!"
people that have a LIFE are people who can relate with other people. who enjoy life. who accept responsibility but also have fun.
people that spend uber much time on the PC don't have a life. Maybe the programmers, unless, well,... something.
people who play too much games dont hab a life. com'on.
people who are SO caught up with their jobs don't hab a life. there is more to do on Earth then work, ya know?
people who are SOOOO addicted to something don't hab a life. Dude, get a life.
so there. go out and get a life.

It depends on the situation. It can be an insult or a good suggestion. See who and how they say that.
Basically it means to try something better than you do now.
See links I provide below.

To the person who said it, it means that the issue you have, the question you asked or the answer you gave barely scratched the surface of what they would consider important.
I don't think I have ever used that phrase. At least here in Y!A.

It means that you are supposedly engaging in behavior that is menial, trivial, or petty and that if you had a productive lifestyle you wouldn't be so wrapped up in small details or things that don't concern people whose lives keep them active.
