Well, I do know that she needs some sort of punishment or it will get worse. Being charged? Well, the punishment should be appropriate to the age of your step daughter.

How does your wife feel about having her daughter charged with stealing?

You haven’t really supplied much information for people to be able to understand your situation…
What did she steal?… Why did she steal it?… Is it the first time she has stolen from you?
How old is she?… Does she steal from anyone else?… What is the likely penalty if she is charged?

Working solely on the information that you have provided, I would have to say ‘no’ do not have her charged.
What you perhaps need to realise and appreciate, is that if your step-daughter is charged with an offence by the police, she will get a Police Record which will go against her prospects of gaining employment later in life.
Do you want that on your head?

If, your step-daughter was repeatedly stealing from you with the intention of buying drugs, and had ignored all your previous attempts to stop her, and she had refused counselling, I would perhaps suggest that having her charged by the police, may be the only option available to you.
That is perhaps the only situation where I would recommend having her charged by the police !!!

Yes. It is the only way to teach her a lesson. She is pushing the limits to see where her boundaries are. Charging her will show her she has crossed the line, and smarten up. The more you let her get away with things, the more she is able to make wrong choices which could affect her life negatively. The next thing you know she'll be 17 yrs old, pregnant and alone.

My brother pawned some of my mother's things. He pawned my grandmother's furniture that my mom inherited. They never charged him, and he got away with it. He made more and more wrong choices after that until he ended up getting a DUI, losing his license, and smoking dope every day.

Absolutely not.She foremost is your daughter. This should be handled by you guys.Should she payfor this?yes but what good is it going to do to have her have this on her record for life.Sit down come up with a very severe consequence and let her understand what you are doing for her.If she learns then great if not at least you did all you can and then its on her.Understand yes she maybe an adult I dont know but she is still your child. The consequences should reflect her age and what she has done.

If this is a first offense, maybe you could punish her and tell her that this will not be tolerated-and that if it happens again you will press charges. If it does happen again then you know what you have to do.

If she is underage, I'm sure you can think of a better solution to the problem.

It could shock her into realising what appalling behaviour that is.
