I've been involved with women's boxing since it was established as a part of USA Boxing in 1994. I have had the pleasure of watching the sport grow and the girls and women mature along with it. One of the misconceptions is that the women should be boxing like the men. They will never be able to do that - their bodies are made differently. The comparison between the two needs to stop and the women looked at individually. The women I know are very dedicated and work as hard, if not harder, than their male counterparts - they do have more to prove. Sandy Martinez Pino, as the AIBA Women's Committee Chair, has made great strides in bringing the women into the international world of boxing. Through her efforts, the women now have their own Continental and World Championships and a majority of the AIBA countries have women's programs. Because every other sport, except softball, has women representation at the Olympics, I think it is only fair that the sport be included. The women work hard and they should have their opportunity. The IOC will make a decision in 2009 whether or not to include women's boxing in the 2012 Olympics. I hope that it is.

Boxing Hottie ~
Yes, absolutely. There should have been female boxing in the Olympics soon after they had the first recognized Women's National Golden Glove Tournament. These female athletes are truly incredible, they workout harder than most men in the gym, their dedication to the sport cannot be questioned. There's more to them than just cat pawing and looking like they don't know what they're doing these fighters at the national level are smooth, slick and most admirable.
These women would be surely an asset to our Olympic team. They would do our country proud. And the deserve to showcase their skills in the greatest amateur showcase there is, The Olympics.
Thanks for the great boxing question Boxing Hottie......I didn't like Million Dollar Baby either.

Why not? Since some women take seriously the boxing business I think they will get a great opportunity in the olympics too. In the martial arts on the olympics the women are included, why not in boxing?!

Yes! I used to box a while back and i worked out with some of the women fighters in the gym, and they work just as hard, if not harder than the men. I like women's boxing and watch it every chance i get. They put 110 percent into learning their craft and i see nothing wrong with putting women's boxing in the olympics.

Yes. I believe in equal representation of sport that can be done by both men and women. Personally, on turn-off for televised sports is the constat gender-stereotyping . For example, women are seldom seen doing any contact sport (e.g. boxing, wrestling, martial arts.); as men are seldom seen doing gymastics or other other non-compative sport.

If you could get enough corporate sponsors for women boxing (with the exception of Budwiser),you could make a really good show for women boxers.

How about the concept of mixed matches? Take a lighter man, say 130 and put him upgainst a heavyweight woman, say 165 lbs or so.?

Yes. I am surprised it's not. I find it hard to see the difference. Well in terms of aesthetics a great deal of difference but otherwise why not?
