Be brave, be strong, be yourself. Don't let anybody influence you to take advantage of your good faith and push you to do things you would never do otherwise.

I think the religion itself does not cause the problems. It is we humans who twist it around into the "send us more money", or "vote for this guy/gal", or even "We'll kill you if you don't believe in our God".
If you're a Christian, for example, read your Bible and be faithful to it.
The tricky part is finding a church/mosque/etc. that will help you connect with whatever God you believe in (not for the profit of the church/mosque/etc., but for your benefit)
I do agree with the last part of your question about avoiding others' influence.

How can anybody believe in atheism after the misery they have caused to this world by their "unbelief"
Please, don't believe in God if you don't wont to: but don't delegate to anyone the right to tell you that
You cannot have prayer in schools and are supposed to accept it.
Cannot have "Under God" in the pledge of allegiance and are supposed to accept it.
Cannot have the Ten commandments on public buildings and are supposed to accept it.
Do not ban the Bible with H.R. 4200 hate crimes legislation and supposed to accept it.
Arrest Christians on the Streets of Philadelphia for protesting a Gay rights parade financed by the city of Philadelphia practicing our right of free speech and supposed to accept it.
I can go on, You atheist's accuse us of shoving the Bible down your throats, but look who's is shoving what down whose throats?
It's the other way around, You force our children to go to school and shove secular humanist ideology down our throats when we cannot afford to send them to private christian schools and or home school them and force feed them the farce of evolution down our throats and we are supposed to accept it.
NO WAY!! we will not allow this, YOU will not be allowed to turn this nation into a secular society, accept it.

yeah.. most important thing is that youre enjoying your life without hurting anybody. Religion just brainwashes the minds of people..teaching our kids lies.. threatening them by saying if you dnt believe in god you will go to hell and burn and its painful.. it scares the mind of young ones even old ones.
