Okay, first let me explain that I am in the USA...I was a manager for a long time of a fast food restaurant. And here goes...
1. The rent or lease on the property/building is usually based on a % of the GROSS sales or $ per square foot which ever is MORE. And in Mall's and on turnpikes (I think those are the same as your motorway's) they charge a lot more for the privilege of being there!
2. The employees are usually paid around the average hourly rate for the area the store is in. The same person could be paid $8 an hour in NY and in a small community be paid $6. it depends on the local market.
3. Fast food makes money on pennies....in my experience the food cost of a "burger" had doubled in 10 years. This does not figure in employee, delivery, building or utilities costs.
4. Usually the price of items is based on the nearest competitors and how much the market is actually willing to pay for that food. Face it you will only pay so much for a burger no matter how much the cost goes up for the restaurant. Again don't forget that if your utilities are going up so is theirs. And as a business they pay a different rate and it is alot more!
I hope this answer's your question....and can I add to please remember that the folks that work there day in and day out work really hard and deserve your respect. Please remember they don't set the prices...if you don't like them contact the owners and talk to them. Take the time to make someone's day and be sure that if they do a good job to let them know. The fast food industry is a hard life and mostly the people who work there are treated badly by coustomers and taken for granted by the companies they work for. But they serve you none the less.

I think charging stations in the first place are a joke. There is essentially a charging station just about every 40 feel along american roads. Every power pole is a possible charging station. Charging multi cell packs charged correctly last much longer then the common way of just ramming in the power. The best equipment for charging is complex with computers and alike. Charging slowly right now with the battery tech we have now is the best way to get the most out of the life of the battery and making it a long life at that . What would work and be much less expensive is changing the batteries like we do with things like remote control toy cars that use common cell batteries, or like your TV remote control. The only way I see electric cars working is a universal battery pack that can be swapped out very quickly, like half the time it takes to fill a tank at the pump. You drive up to a changing station and a human maybe even the driver swaps the pack out for a charged battery..

I think you have answered your own question. They do have a captive market and if you like their junk food with all of it's side effect then they have you.
Perhaps all of the Burger junkies should make a boycott of all motorway outlets. If their sales go down by even 10% they are going to take notice. If they went down by 50% they would be in really deep water.
Perhaps by a web site, if you can do it, you could rally all the motorway users of Burger places to not buy for a few weeks then see the prices tumble.

They have the monolopy cos people dont want to stray from the motorway to find food, loos ect
Motorway services have to provide staff transport by law for all staff including the nightshift. If you use company transport and have to go home unwell or whatever they have to get you there. They sent me home in a taxi

i agree with you that any motorway establishment seems to want to charge through the nose for food
we stopped off at a foodie place once and the sandwiches were being retailed at £5!! i told them precisely what i thought of their pricing/daylight robbery policies and refused to pay that for two slices of bread with a few lettuce leaves as they were NOT gold plated!
i do wonder if these places work on a 'captive audience' policy and hope that no one else does what i did and cries 'foul' over it and refuses to feed those 'fat cats'

captive audience is true however service stations are owned by large corportations that rent out the land to Mcdonalds Burger King etc the rent the companies charge are extortinaite, thats why petrol is more expensive there too.

well you right someone is getting rich as when you traveling and they know it you don't want to be inconvenienced so you don't might paying the prices..so they charge more...you should fool them and pack a cooler when you travel and sit in the rest area and eat and tell another person why you do this and they will tell someone and so on ...the word of mouth is the best advertisement in the world....i feel sorry for the employees that have to make that comuniate...i would be very interested to know if they recieve a better wage......

They charge more at the motorway service stations because they work on the principal: "where else you gonna go?"
Basically they've got you by the balls, unless you take your own food with you.

The main reason for this is because the rents that they have to pay for their sites are very expensive so, they have to increase their prices to pay for this, there is no other reason and it is not because there is nowhere else to go, if you want to pay cheaper prices just pull off at the first slip road and go into the nearest town.
