Because of differences in the way the older and the current version of symantec work, the current virus definition files will not work with the older versions of the program. That is why it automatically updates your version when it updates the definitions. If you were to reinstall an older version it would get updated on the next definition update.

If your PC can not handle the new version, I would recommend removing the Symantec and replacing with one of the free virus scanners and s couple of free spyware programs. They are not the resource hogs that Symantec is. It is a good program, but it requires an above average PC to run well.

For an antivirus, download and run AVG virus scanner from http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_405a782.exe for free. I have used it for about three years both at home and professionally with no issues.

As the free anti-virus programs do not include a spyware scanners, download both Ad-aware ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and run them about once a week. Run both as one may caught something the other missing.

Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.

I agree on you with that. You will be suprise to see how many other peoples got the similar problem. Everywhere in the forum, they just talk about Norton flaw. Everyday it just keep slower and slower. But when the first time Norton appear, it was a very good product especially in killing virus but now it lose my trust.
For me, I install Norton Internet Security 2006 on my laptop. Its takes about half an hour before i can get online that doesnt count for the windows to start.
What a waste!
I think i gonna removed that software soon before i make backup to my files. It just making my computer suffer. It not just slower but its makin the cpu get hotter.

i think it'll always update to the latest version unless you remove live update but then your computer isn't protected properly so you may as well go for some free av, like Avast or AVG.

norton and macafee are notorious resource hoggers and considerably slow down anyones computer as they scan each and every little thin you open which you dont need.

id get rid if i were you
