Research is all well and good. It depends on what you define as clever. If you define clever in the sort of attributes that are typical in men but atypical in women your results will tell you that men are cleverer. If you define cleverness as attributes women will excel in then the answer will be that women are cleverer.
This battle of the sexes thing gets on my t1ts. it is all so 1980's. Best move on I say.

First of all, there are different types of intelligence. For example men, on average, do better in spatial reasoning tests than women. On the other hand women, on average, tend to be better at certain communications tasks. So to come up with any measure of intelligence depends a lot on how you weight the scores from the different types of test.

Secondly, it turns out that in any ability study like this, there is a tendency for the men to have a higher standard deviation than the women. In other words, there's a wider range of ability in men than in women, which means that most of the people with the highest scores will be men, but most of the people with the lowest scores will also be men. The fact that the average value is slightly different for men and women doesn't really make much difference, since the vast majority of both will be in the middle somewhere.

Thirdly, even with a characteristic like height, where the difference is actually much more pronounced between men and women, the fact that men are on average taller doesn't really allow you to draw any conclusions except statistical ones. There is a higher probability that any particular man will be taller than any particular woman, but there's still a significant chance that the woman will be taller.

Lastly, intelligence isn't everything. As I mentioned right at the beginning, women on average are better communicators, and this is at least as important as general intelligence in determining success in life, if not more so.

None is cleverer than the other. The question is that the structure of female and male brains are different. Women happen do be able to do many things at the same time for example, men usually are better about outer space problems, and they concentrate only on one thing at a time.

There are so many flaws with research like this that its amazing they can make the claim at all. Can we not, for once, just accept that women are better at some things, and men at others and stop wasting public money on studies that will just lead to persecution of one or the other gender? I'm sure if you geared an entire I.Q test around gauging emotion, women would come out on top. Similarly for language. The truth is, I.Q tests seem to focus around the logical, something that men are better at.

It's because we use one side of the brain at once, not both. Using both means you are equating what you are focusing on with an emotion, women have a strong emotion with everything possible, so they have to talk about it. Men see a problem and focus solely on that problem. I hate being pulled away from what I'm doing for any reason, one thing at a time, that is why we can eventally over take women on the long run of intelligence, thought first, emotions come later. Somethings to men are just a thought and have no emotion, so we don't have to sort things out, its black or white, not pink, yellow or cobalt blue.

Sorry to sound mysogenistic, but women are only on an ego-trip when they're always going on about women being cleverer than men on all these misandristic adverts. Face it, they're sexist and rubbish and women can't even talk on a mobile phone and walk at the same time. I also don't like being violently beaten over the head with an umbrella when I commit a minor faux-pas with both men and women laughing at my predicament when if the situation was me beating my girlfriend, I'd be beaten to a pulp! Sexual equality? F*cking bollocks!

It's rubbish. This research was done as an average of men and women....Some of the men could have been chief executives and some of the women fulltime parents !! Men on average will come across as more clever as they nearly all work without a career break. Women are far more intelligent!!!

So how does this prove the men are more clever than women!
It only gives an "explanation" why girls get better grades than boys at school.

Tish tosh. To what measure of intelligence are the researchers referring? I.Q, E.I, practical ability ?? There is no real definition of intelligence and so it is impossible to make such a statement.

People who are academically proficient are so because a) they have a good general knowledge base (not necessarily a true indication of 'intelligence' and b) they knuckle down and WORK at it. Therefore the secod sentence of your question could be quite accurate.

My philosophy... who cares? An individual is an individual. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. If someone wants to do well at school (whether male or female) is generally going to do well.

I think the word Clever is a blanket which covers everything and is therefore useless. Firstly in needs to be split down to intelligence and common sense which are totally different, then intelligence needs to be spilt down into numbers and letters, you could have the "cleverest" mathematician in the world but could they write a best selling novel??

Also being "clever" isn't the only factor which is important in your life, determination means the ultimate difference between success and failure.
