That would depend on whether they were 'a bit' religious in the first place, and excellent documentary on the nature of athiesm featured an extremely eldery lady who had been an athiest all her life. She had no fear of death and had not changed her views one jot.

In the main elderly people who had faith growing up will increase their links with church as it brings them comfort and, in some cases, a social network - rather than become 'more religious'.

The vast majority of people are born with a genetic predisposition to be gullible, because sceptics and free thinkers have always been considered a threat to the establishment and culled out of the population as heretics, blasphemers or atheists. Therefore the gene for gullibility was favoured for survival over the gene for scepticism. As people grow older, they may use logical thought process to reject the concept of a mythical god or cling to this irrational notion all their lives if their gullibility gene is dominant enough.

I think there's a tendency for people to become more spiritually-minded the more settled they become in relationships and so on. That sometimes translates into an increased interest in religion. Sometimes it means a move AWAY from organised religion.
